Special Notes

Scandal! takes a bite into S3's newly invigorated Saturday nights

S3's 19h30 timeslot reached a million viewers last month for The Masked Singer SA finale, which was the channel's No.1 show throughout its run, increasing from 776,981 viewers in its first month in April to the finale million.

Next thing... WHAM. Scandal! moved into the timeslot on the same night that MasterChef South Africa 5 premiered and viewership in the timeslot plunged by 60%, dropping from 1,013,809 viewers in June to 401,189 viewers in July.

Audience share dropped from 10 to 4.2.

Is it MasterChef or Scandal!? We believe it's Scandal! because the MasterChef repeat on SABC2 performed better than it's premiere broadcast on S3, attracting 442,632 viewers, which suggests people tuned in because they missed it - because of Scandal!

Queen Modjadji's not Shaka iLembe

Mzansi Magic's new historical drama Queen Modjaji has failed to reach the same numbers or clout that Shaka iLembe achieved in 2023.

Shaka premiered as the channel and DStv's No. 1 show in June 2023 with 929,731 viewers for its most watched episode in its debut month, with an audience share of 12.2.

A stark contrast with Queen Modjadji which attracted 584,264 viewers for its premiere with an audience share of 6, in third position on Mzansi Magic.

Very noticeable drop from newcomer Isiphetho, even though it still holds the sixth spot on e.tv. I do wonder if it'll go back to having three million viewers again, or if e.tv will decide to can yet another telenovela in the 18:30 slot.

I thought Scandal will peak on weekends but their best peak for the month of July was on a Tuesday. And still the number is being led by HOZ and Skeem Saam still leads at19h30 even on weekdays. Is the weekend strategy not even pulling a mere 3m for such a big show?
