These are the primetime adult television viewing figures for January 2024.

If you can't see the listing below, then click this link to access them in a document instead: Top Shows on TV: January 2024

Special notes:
Viewers were subjected to loadshedding ranging from Stage 1 to Stage 4 this month, with a few moments of no loadshedding in between.

Housekeeping

Rather late than never.

We're only publishing these viewership figures now as they weren't available from the Broadcast Research Council until today.

We suspect they were preoccupied with other matters like the latest universe update. The overall TAMS universe was updated on Monday 29 January 2024 for the first time since 5 October 2020.

According to the BRC, the total number of viewers watching free-to-air TV has decreased between then and now, and the total number of viewers who watch Pay TV has increased.

It'll be interesting to see if this impacts on the February viewership figures.

Sibongile & The Dlaminis movin' up the charts

It's now in DStv's fourth position, having outperformed Mzansi Magic's My Brother's Keeper for the first time this month.

Here's an overview of its performance since its premiere:

Month Viewership for the most watched episode Position
August 2024 493,723 10th
September 2024 551,325 7th
October 2024 604,664 10th
November 2024 593,472 8th
December 2024 803,080* 6th
January 2024 790,726 4th

*This figure was higher because all shows increased in December when we were saved from the relentless blackouts.

What's causing this climb in Sibongile & the Dlaminis?

Perhaps these reviews by TVSA members explain it:

Skeem saam is even outperforming GTL but still they remove it to 19:30. It will really be interesting to see next month ratings bt there's no way both of them are getting 4m viewers next month

People on social media be lying and saying "the only thing we watch on pay tv is football" then boom the numbers are no where on super sports channels even when the channels are open to all dstv packages. Also, this proves that sabc has potential but sabc is sabotaging the channel for example Deal or no Deal is suitable for sabc 3 but was on sabc1 now moved to sabc2.

It's a given that if SABC and SS were to broadcast same matches at the same time SABC will come up top... so they are not lying when thet say that, it just that SABC is a public broadcaster so there's no chance in hell that SS out numbers SABC

Also S/O to EtvScandal for dropping Bombs left right and center , for me the best show in SA.

@qavile not a fan of either Umkhokha, My Brother's Keeper or Champions. Champions feels like it's in the wrong channel. Should've been an SABC 3 show.

In The Dock is MIA. The show didn't feature even once on these ratings for all the months it was shown. So, nobody watched it? What a waste of everybody's time. People exxagerate alot on social media, @qavile. The “the only thing we watch on pay tv is football” is definitely a lie.
