Review: The Theory of Everything

Looking at the trailer of “The theory of everything” you would be easily forgiven to think you watching a rom-com with a tragic edge to it, but is it? Let’s dig in

Stephen Hawking is one of the world’s foremost scientists; his contribution to the theory of the big bang or how the universe was born is quite famous. Especially given the tenacity to be able to produce his seminal work whilst facing a devastating disease that literally disabled him in every way but the disabilities could not stop him from making his impact on the world, it makes for a great story and thus “the theory of everything” film based on the book by Jane Hawking.

Yet what surprises about the “The theory of everything’’, outside for Eddie Redmayne oscar winning performance, is that the movie is basically a love story for our times. It’s about fighting the odds and showcasing some insightful views into nature of love, marriage and the human condition

We follow two different people; who have mutual respect and love for each other in Felicity Jones as the future Mrs Hawkings and her college sweetheart, and see their relationship evolve with time.

Some of the observations about relationships are a bit hard to swallow but they make for interesting conversation. Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking does an incredible job of showing the contradictions and tenacity of her character. She is amazing to watch.

Yet it’s Eddie Redmayne, poor dude who had the misfortune of being the villan in the awful Jupiter Ascending, whose given material that really shows his acting chops.  His performance is both physical and emotive. From the slurred speech, bodies contortion, to him being able to emote jealous, happiness with little to no movement. Eddie Redmayne really puts it out all out there.

The theory of everything does a great job at showcasing other aspects of Hawkings that most of us are ignorant of; from his sex life, wit, humour and selfishness. Yet it shows what true grit and a little support from the ones you love, can achieve. Hawkings story shows, as cliché as it may sound ,the triumph of the human spirit and the cost that truimph comes with.

Hi Thabang - saw it yesterday! Eddie's Oscar is well -deserved and so was Felicity Jones. I hope we see both of them in lots more to come. would have been cool if she became the Black Cat in the next Amazing Spiderman but Marvel is not going down that route now.

Hi Thabang, have you seen The Sessions? A film about a poet who was paralyzed from the neck down due to polio who hired a sex surrogate to lose his virginity, also based on a true story.  This subject matter reminds of that film which also has remarkable performances. I look forward to seeing this one as well.  Poor Michael Keaton though, but I'm sure Eddie's oscar was well-deserved.
