50 Most Influential People in SA Football

I'm a sucker for lists! Rich lists, Sexiest Lists, whatever list you give, I will read. So, when I saw an issue of Football Arena last week talking about a list of 50 Most Influential People In South African Football, I wanted to take out my R4.95 and buy but I remembered how disappointed I was after religiously buying their first 3 issues (all in the name of supporting a South African product), so I thought, hayikhona.
Well this week, a friend of mine gave me a copy he had received from someone so thanks to him I was finally able to read through their list :-)

soc

The 50 Most Influential People In South African Football according to Walter Mokoena's magazine/newspaper, FOOTBALL ARENA are listed as follows:

  • Kjetil Siem – PSL CEO
  • Kaizer Motaung – Kaizer Chiefs MD
  • Natasha Thsichlas – PSL Executive Committee Member
  • Raymond Hack – SAFA CEO
  • Ace Ngcobo – PSL General Manager
  • Danny Jordaan – FIFA 2010 CEO
  • Mike Ntombela – Adidas Football Manager
  • Prof Ronnie Schloss – PSL Operations Officer
  • Rob Moore – Football Agent
  • Romeo Khumalo – Vodacom SA Commercial Executive Director
  • Dr.Irvin Khoza – Orlando Pirates Owner
  • Molefi Oliphant – SAFA President
  • Mike Makaab – Football Agent
  • Glyn Binkin – Football Agent
  • Peter Mancer – PSL Marketing Director
  • Mark Gleeson – Football Journalist
  • Molefi Mika – Sowetan Sports Editor
  • Makhenkesi Stofile – SA Sports Minister
  • Mvuzo Mbebe – SABC Head of Programming
  • Robert Marawa – Sports Presenter
(eish, I know it's his job but I feel like he's more than just a presenter. The presenter bit makes me uncomfortable. I need a suitable title for Robert, presenter doesn't cut it, he's not a presenter)
  • Jario Leal – Bafana Bafana Assistant Coach
  • Jazzman Mahlakgane – Football Agent
(He's the man behind Teko Modise the brand.)
  • Peter du Toit – Publisher
(See my comment on Richard Maguire. Peter's with Soccer Laduma & FA thought it would be painful to mention that *rolling my eyes*)
  • Teko Modise – Football player
  • Imtiaz Patel – SuperSport CEO
  • Jomo Sono – Jomo Cosmos Owner
  • Pitso Mosimane – Bafana Bafana Assistant Coach
  • Richard Maguire – Editorial Director
( I found it weird that they named him but wouldn't say where he's working. Well, it's Kick Off)

  • Joel Santana – Bafana Bafana Head Coach
  • John Commitis – Ajax Cape Town Owner
  • Lucas Radebe – Soccer Legend (Mmmm...at that title)
  • Stanley Tshabalala – SAFA Head of Youth Development
  • Mohammed Mubarak – SAFA VP
  • Walter Mokoena – Owner of Mokoena Sports Media
(So Walter compiles a list and sommer throws his name in there. Tjo mara ke if he's powerful he's powerful neh? lol)
  • Aaron Mokoena – Football player
  • Stan Matthews – SuperSport United CEO
  • Patrice Motsepe – Mamelodi Sundowns Owner
  • Bobby Motaung – Kaizer Chiefs Team Manager
  • Sylvester Ndaba – TV Personality
(I wonder if he's proud of that title)
  • George Khonou – Platinum Stars Chairman
  • Happy Ntshingila – ABSA Marketing Director
(Okay!)
  • Sipho Nkumane – Bafana Bafana Team Manager
  • Davide Cardrelli – Nike SA GM
  • Zola Majavu – PSL Prosecutor
(Oh nkosi, this guy loves the sound of his voice. Everytime he speaks to Marawa he always, & i'm not exaggerating, he always talks about how he must come into the studio to explain this or that. With that said, I've learnt quite a lot from him in terms of rules of the game and how discipline is applied)
  • Kirsten Nematandani – SAFA Head of Referees
  • Serame Letsoaka – South Africa U-20 Coach
  • S’busiso Mseleku – City Press Sports Editor
  • llan Sobel – Coca-Cola Marketing Executive
  • Mato Madlala – Golden Arrows owner
  • Michael Murphy – Attorney

Okay, I would love to talk about FOOTBALL ARENA in general and my thoughts on it but that deserves it's own blog!

Any thoughts on the list? Anyone they left out? Who shouldn't even have been on the list to begin with?

My comment:
"Well, it depends what you mean by Influential".

Richard Maguire – Editorial Director
( I found it weird that they named him but wouldn't say where he's working. Well, it's Kick Off)

Richard Maguire has been with Kickoff for some time now....He took over from Mark Gleeson as Editor of Kickoff in the 90's

(So Walter compiles a list and sommer throws his name in there. Tjo mara ke if he's powerful he's powerful neh? lol)

Hayi unezinto ke lobhuti....uyakuthanda nokuzishaynisa.

Walter should not be there. He is not as clued up about sports as he should be. the things he says are just not on. If he made the list then Tshepo Mabona and Carol Manana should have made the list. I hate the way Walter says his name. arrrg

Robert Marawa is the man. The is more to him then just being a presenter. He deserves a better title. Who is that guy that Robert calls when there's an update on legal disputes or disciplinary hearing in clubs? He should have made the list. He is the most well spoken and knowledgeable person I've heard on Radio.

Sylvester Ndaba' title does not do justice to him. This man is the man when it comes to rules and regulations of soccer

Big J- Jomo Sono should have also made the list. He has the capabilities to influence how things should be handled. And some players look up to him.

Raymond Hack, number 4???? ayike...i dont like this man...

Mike Makaab, he's got to be the busiest football agent in Mzansi

Walter should be seen not heard

Aaron Mokena??? the guy shouldn't be our captain, let alone be in the nation team, now he makes the list???

Happy Ntshingila, i love this man...there's just something about him

Walter Mokoena – Owner of Mokoena Sports Media
Next to Walter's name there supposed to be: "Sports Presenter"...........coz now it makes him seem better than Robert Marawa.

Nonny
11 Jun 2009 10:36

Uphi uTshepo Mabona???
We don't care, coz he doesn't deserve to be there.

Cande I am also shocked that uMangena is not there, or is just our eyes?

Hey Nonny, uWalter IS indeed better than Marawa.>>>> @ kiki  WHAT R U TALKING ABOUT. uCarol should have been on that list, wht about Marks Maponyane, uMangena, so the only player in the PSL that is most influential is Modise? kiki X
11 Jun 2009 12:23

Peeps, up to now NO1 NO1 NO1 has answered my question about what Marawa does besides presenting and being the face of soft n free S-CURL. Walter owns Mokoena Sports Media...lol

Registering and attending are two different things bathong!!

lol Kiki I give up on u..............LMAO

GML
11 Jun 2009 13:34

@Kiki X: Robert is able to get the really influencial people on his show and is able to get the answers that us the listeners need. Walter is annoying and his voice is annoying. The way he says his name is annoying and worse, he doesnt know half as much about sports as Robert does. He was only given the platform by SABC because Robert left.

Brown Shuga
11 Jun 2009 13:39

<<<<@ Cande, even Brickz goes to rehab....lol
Registering and attending are two different things bathong!!>>>
kwa kwa kwa kwa kwa kw akw akwa I also give up... lol

kiki X
11 Jun 2009 14:40

GML, thats why i like Walter for those same reasons that annoy you ngaye. He saw a gap and utilized it, and that is why he has his own company. Most of the times what works is putting yourself and your future first. So Marawa can entertain you with his voice but i hope i wont have to cough up my hard earned cash one day for his surgery after something has happenned to the voice or throat....If he gets fired, what is he gon do kahle kahle???lol

kiki X
11 Jun 2009 14:41

Did Robert leave the SABC or was he forced to resign??? It's a question.

Brown Shuga
11 Jun 2009 14:49

Jomo is on the list guys, i must have omitted him by mistake.

mjj
11 Jun 2009 18:05

GML - to correct you about Walter, he is the co-founder/Editor or Soccer Life, he sold his 50% stake few years back.............but his inclusion on the list is still suspect, 2moro they'll say Tshepo Mabona is also influential...let me read the rest of the comments

mjj
11 Jun 2009 18:13

Kwa kwa kwa kwa kwa kwa kwa @ Kiki X..............hayi uhamba wedwa wena? Uthathwa phi? You made this blog very interesting....I have issues with most of the names on this list especially these: 1. Romeo Khumalo 2. Makhenkesi Stofile 3. Stanley Tshabalala (is he still alive?, he was Influential when he was still Screamer Tshabalala teh sundowns coach, not anymore) 4. Walter Mokoena........nc nc nc....I know he has a soccer club, started Soccer Life and now has some cheap Magazine i've never seen, but really now, is he influential.......... Where is Bennie's Name? Clearly if they can add Aaron they can mos include Bennie? Let me go fetch the COnfed cup tickets, I'll be back to comment more
