The Observer: Late Night with Kgomotso

When I read the press releases on Kgomotso Matsunyane’s brand new talk series titled Late Night with Kgomotso. I thought they were kidding, because this is a genre which is dominated by man for very good reasons. Although I don’t mind a women hosting a late night show, in fact I think if one could be found, “that is if we haven’t already in Kgomotso – which I doubt”, I say go for it. But experience has taught me that such shows need someone who has a very strong background in comedy, as in either a “working and successful” comedy actor or stand-up comedian. You also can’t host such a show or format worried about your public image and perception, unless its for the protection of your obvious talents in that show.

The format for a successful late night show is based on the very reliable, yet often stupid approach men have to life and everything else. Given the audiences for late night television, chances for women hosting a long-running successful late show are like NEVER!

Most people just don’t think women aren't funny, especially funny every week at night for 26weeks on Saturday. Who is watching? Is it people who are at some hospital at night waiting for treatment or emergency surgery? Scheduling people!

I personally do not think women are not funny because if you look at women such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler behind SNL's ''Weekend Update'' they are really funny. But the difference is that those ladies are comedians and that’s all they do. Just because you have your friends in stitches once in a while and your employees (they laugh because you pay their salaries – not because you are funny), it does not mean you should show the rest of us that you are funny. Take up stand-up comedy first and if you survive that then we may have something to talk about. I am not in any way saying that in order to host a late night show you have to be comedian, but we all know the format is based on the host being funny.

Lizz Winstead was quoted as saying ''There's plenty of women who have great mass appeal,''. She co-created The Daily Show for Comedy Central. I will reiterate the point I made earlier, those women do funny as their business, not occasionally. Its their passion, its their life.

It is a known fact for any television professional that late-night is watched mostly by the young men advertisers crave — and young men don't think women are funny. I am sure you can guess, what those young men think about when a women is in the picture. Here is a hint, it has nothing to do with you talking... not unless you are nasty!  Hence we have that pornographic infestation over at ETV and everybody knows that young men from every corner are watching. What are these boys going to find funny about this old gogo talking at night (who probably looks like some of these kids parents) whilst they are waiting for their e-porn fix after being robbed by Brainbox.

Now I decided to torture myself and kept on reciting “it’s a first episode”, “it’s a first episode” and I thought my mantra was working until she started missing her cameras. I immediately had a Felicia Mabuza flash-back. Here is what I am talking about:

K5

(NO THE OTHER WAY.....)

K6
(NO, MAN.... THE OTHER WAY)

K4
(FORGET IT, THIS DOG AINT HUNTING.....)

Television history teachers the following - Cynthia Garret had a short late-'90s stint as host of NBC's Later; Whoopi Goldberg made a failed attempt at a syndicated show. But the only woman to make a major nighttime network break is Joan Rivers, first as Johnny Carson's permanent guest host in the '80s and then with her own short-lived Fox show (1986-87). On the other side of the coin you have guys like Phat Joe who had a great show whilst on ETV, although it could have used a better budget but he was following a trend of those male hosted late night shows. Greed and whatever else just swallowed that cool show into nothingness. If there was someone to become a long-standing late-night show host, it was Phat Joe. He had the personality, popularity and comic excellence to be a late night show super power. As for Paul Viv, that was a TELEVISION STROKE right in front of our eyes. My goodness, it gives me pains in my back just thinking of that laxative experience.

NBC's VP of late-night and prime-time series Rick Ludwin was quated as saying ''The fact is that over 50 years of late-night television, there has not been one successful late-night show hosted by a woman.'' Perhaps Kgomotso may just be the one. I would not bet on it, especially in this economic climate.

In order to make something a success, you need to be willing to invest in it. Firstly, the set of this show looks like they are taping from someone’s garage. Kgomotso is laughing so loud, the sound engineer must intervene, she might have learned from Noeleen. This genre needs a huge audience and a great production team of writers, producers and creative staff. Most people don’t know that late night shows go through the same production cycle as soap operas. They have more or less the same type cast except for the actors…. Well late night has actors but they either do sketch segments or are interviews by the host.

Kgomotso kicked off her show with what seemed like a five hour long never ending speech which I found out later that it was supposed to be a variety of jokes based on current events. At one point she actually told the audience, “that was a joke” and they laughed. I don’t know if they laughed at her or at the joke.

K2

An extract from the synopsis of the show on TVSA reads:
Both cheeky and celebratory in tone, the show will feature a balance of talk and entertainment, showcasing the country’s hottest creative talents, from musicians to comedians.

This show screamed daytime talk show. Granted the lady has a character which makes her unique but what came though for me whilst watching was a fun loving executive who could hold a conversation, but not a television conversation. Its still early days maybe she has something planned around episode 18 or so.

The most interesting thing about the show, in between my channel hoping, was that the first guest comedian (forgot his name) was funnier and sort of held the show together. He had more jokes that the host had question to ask. That was down right embarrassing, they should give the show to that guy maybe we would be more entertained. This is what you get when you try to stay at home and relax with your TV. You end up being bombarded by crap. “26 weeks” my goodness, it is going to be rough ride. All we can do is hope that it will improve or something new will catch our interests in the world of Dstv. Alternatively, plan your party route for the next 25 weeks and you can leave your house at 9pm or 10pm.

I won't idss her cause I'm a woman....I'll give her time to grow and a benefit of a doubt - that she'll improve her presenting skills.

But I hated the set.
First of all she's on a sort of bar counter and her guests are on couche...The whole set up there is sooo impersonal. Think big  company reception areas...Get bar stools for your guests dannit - oh I forgot SABS 2 has a 'thing' with bar stools.

Then the couches are propped up on some platform - the guests feet are literally hanging...that must be uncomfortable...

Then the cocktail of colours...the purble and blue is brilliant but the floor man yesssesss it kills it. Those reddish navvish carpets and then the couches are beige and brown adn the prop-up place is cream..Hayi man who'e the set designer for this show.

Other than that - good idea for a show..>Lets see if she can pull it off. She gonna improve.

I usually agree with you on a lot of things but this time our opinions differ.  I came across the show quite by accident while channel surfing i'd already flipped to another channel but i'd caught a glimpse of her face and thought to myself "mhh, let's hear what Neo's sister has to say."  I had an inspiration to write my first article after watching the talkshow but then you beat me to it.  My article would have been full of praise for the lady though.   I was quite impressed by her braveness.  Phat Joe was a good hast but  he never even cross my mind while i was watching Kgomotso's show.  I am worried about her time slot though because a large number of  the people that  would be interested in watching that kind of a show are definately out partying or out somewhere else and please, please, please you cannot  compare Kgomotso to Felicia.

PS Why are people so worried about who's a gogo and who's not.  Until someone really discovers the fountain of youth, it doesn't matter how many people you refer to as ikhehlekazi/gogo/griza, we're all going to get those wrinkles it is part of the human lifecycle.

was listening to kgomotso's interview with Unathi and Glen on Metro. Glen said kgomotso should buy her brother Neo a better bike and kgomotso i quote" you should get a lifestyle and personality first, leave unathi and melanie alone cause everytime you start with them i wanna come there and blabber at you" or something to that effect. i suspect thats what you are going to get Observer if Kgomotso sees this...LOL. enjoyed reading your article  but cant comment i'll have to observe first...lol

Seemingly most people like me caught the show by accident... Personally I was impressed... afterall that's my kinda thing..... I watched on Saturday and she comes to me as a bubbly lady good for talk shows.... I had fun with her the calibre of guests especially Redi Direko (saw the lighter side of her).... the formart reminded me of SOMIZI's Intimate Connection......

Kgomotso's laugh just pisses the *bleep!* outta me. Is Redi Direko joining the Hollywood craze? She looked very unhealthy to me, gal eat. She's a lovely gal though I've never seen her in that maner. Kagiso was hilarious as per usual. The guy still has no idea that hes U_G_L_Y........HIC

I also caught the show when she had Redi, Kagiso and The Admiral. The show's not bad but there's nothing late night about it, any time slot would do. Maybe she should replace aunt Noeleen on 3Talk.

The guests' feet hanging on those couches must not only be uncomfortable for them but its also uncomfortable to look at.

Redi had the most hedious cornrows. Even on the street they do a better job than that.

Kgomotso was dressed like she was going to the office...

She shud throw away the suit you ws wearing.
The make up was too much....IKO Mash go easy on her bother oops sister.
The show doesn't flow...she just decides to stop at times.

Well laughing at your own jokes while the audience isn't laughing is kinda lame.
Overrall she's badd. I think it would have been a great comeback for Zandi Ntlapo.

Sjoe! I watched the show last night....Kgomotso has potential to become a great talkshow host. I guess the more she does this, the better she'll become.
Last night's show was a bit "nje". She had Letti Matabane, some snake handler, some musician and Kedibone Mulaudzi, a comedian who was NOT funny at all.

She seems like a nice person but also seems like she's still nervous. I was very surprised when after an ad break she welcomed the viewers by saying "Wow, I'm still surprised that you are still watching"....after she said that I actually asked myself why I was still watching because before the break I was bored to death by the Kedibone.
Kgomotso's statement sounded like she didn't think much of her show and that was such a turn off. If she doesn't believe that her show is good then why is she doing it?
Also, her questions to the guests are so boring....

"One thing we don't know about you is.....?"  I mean, really now....if you're gonna have a talkshow, go dig for those things the public doesn't know about your guest so you could discuss them nabo, not give them power on what they want to be revealed....

Otherwise, there is a need for such a show, just hope the execution will get better. I don't like that she sits behind that counter-thingy.....it's a bit impersonal. Also, when her guests walk in, she must walk around it to go and greet them...eish...not wise.

Joe : <<I've never watched her show shame, but I will check it out before I comment, Observer you have insightful blogs!  >>

Like I said above, I kept my promise, so I am here to comment about the show!

What a great show, the gal can present, but there's still room for improvement here and there, nothing bad at all!

In the begining, before any guests arrive, with her jokes, she sounds and seems a bit unsure of something (i don't know what)! But that virus can be easily eliminated with time, lets give her time, soon she will do the intro with confidence and without any hiccups!

She is confident and sure when she is interviewing her guests and I think her show is fun-filled, I had fun watching it! She had me in stitches here and there!

BadBoy T : I LOLed at his comment about Lupi!

Nambitha : Irrelevant comment - what was she wearing bathong? Do women feel uncomfortable in those dresses? I would not feel ma self! I love Nambitha to death, we are from the same town!

Yho, she shocked me when she said that she did not recognise Angelina Jolie when she introduced herself (AJ) to her (N)! Nam, there are some celebs I wouldn't recognise if i were to bump into!

I LOLed when BBT was playing with Nambitha's hair and she said, "Unathi will kill me!" I LOLed when she said if she were to be a porn star, her name would be Kgomotso!

Airguitar guy = weird!

The Soil: Does anyone know this band, they performed at the studio in LNWK and they were great, they did not have any intruments, they were using just their voices and they were WOWWWWWWWWWWW! If anyone knows the band, please gimme their contact details, I want to have a second birthday! party

HTKG - Why manje? I still say the show is boring, the host is boring, the humor is worse than Robert Mugabe saying Cholera was brought by UK in Zim.......... Yes B, she might have potential to be a great host, but she needs to stop trying so hard to be funny....AND NO you don;t laugh at your own Jokes.... Where does TVSA get its writers? - It gets them from the public...people who are passionate about TV.....

hahahahahaha this is sooooo funny, I mean really.

Kgomotso Matsunyane is making money while having fun and someone has the time to write negative, critisising crap about her on TVSA.

mind you, the punctuation is crap

HTKG (There's a letter missing from your name).

Anyway, Observer or any of the other writers on this site, don't get paid to write. Neither do they force YOU or anyone for that matter to read what amounts to THEIR OPINION.

If u're going to be so nitty-picky then maybe u should clean up your own errors first before you start throwing your weight around.

Ref:
just tru to be a little bit clean, ok! vs just try to be a little bit clean, ok! (not sure the exclamation mark is a good choice)

the amount of errors nje, its a pain to read this. vs the amount of errors nje, it's a pain to read this.

Basically what this amounts to is YOU nit picking, going out of your way to find fault with the writer's work purely because you don't like what he wrote about Kgomotso. There are countless articles from TheObserver wherein he either criticises or commends what's on TV. Surely, you are not suggesting he stops doing that because it doesn't sit well with you or any other Kgomotso fan? That would be ludicrous to say the least...
