Move over SAMAs, Zanele Mbokazi has landed

I got myself a ticket to the first ever SABC Crown Gospel Awards at the ICC Cricket Arena over the weekend. And boy, was it a blast!

For the past couple of days, i've been debating whether to write this or not. I was hoping I would leave that to the experts, bo BS, Nonns and the rest bt then I remembered SABC didn't air the awards.
I wish they did...because the SAMAs have got themselves competition from Zanele Mbokazi, the lady behind the Crown Gospel Awards concept.

Except for a few hiccups especially with regards to sitting arrangements, the event went extremely well. Nominees were booked at the spacious Coastal Sun Hotel and were driven with shuttles to ICC before sleek limousines came to pick them up to the red carpet.
Once there, the sitting nightmare began. First, there were too many invited guests such that other nominees did not have a place to sit. But that was sorted out later.

The event opened with a collaboration between Vuka Africa, Worship House and Mzwakhe Mbuli...who recited a poem titled 'The Crown'. I thought the man is getting old, coz he seemed to be forgetting his lines at some point.

Sifiso Ncwane collaborated with Jub Jub and the Jaziel Brothers, Kholeka with Avante, Benjamin Dube with Vicky Vilakazi (shame, she sang so well but didn't get any award).
Hlengiwe Mhlaba, ahem, collaborated with Amazion. You see, I've always suspected Hlengiwe is a zionist.
And oh, the MCs were Gospel Gold's Steven Molakeng and Criselda Kananda...they really did a good job although I heard someone complaining Criselda was a bit formal.

I couldn't help laughing when I heard someone shouting 'Ngang' uShwashwi, look at the way he's dressed'. It turned out it was a poor photographer wearing some pants that exposed his underwear.

Bumped into my favourite boy Lundi, who didn't win any award. Deborah Fraser wore isigcebhezana and she looked more like a sangoma than a gospel singer.
Yho, i can go on and on...what do you guys think, should SABC give us a late broadcast of the awards or should we wait for Shwashwi to his/her thing - assassinate those poor musicians?

NB:Sorry i don't have any pics for you guys and the Crown website hasn't been updated, almost a week later...shame!

I've been wondering about these awards, especially the lack of publicity.

Publicity-wise, this was handled like some black market underground event.

But thanks Sbo for mentioning them...

@Dimago...Well, who else except Sis Ribs? She won a Lifetime Achievement Award as well as Best Gospel Artist. I hear SABC 1 will make her some sort of brand ambassador, she'll be appearing now and again on Mzansi fo Sho.
Anways, the other winners are;

Best Gospel Group - Joyous Celebration
Best Gospel Song - Ncandweni for Zulu Khaya Lami
Best Acapella - Umlayezo Wesikhathi
Best Amazion - Galathia Indlunkulu
Classic of all Times - Hlengiwe Mhlaba for Rock of Ages
Best Traditional Gospel - Sipho Makhabane
Best Album Contemporary Traditional - Jabu Hlongwane
Best Female Gospel Artist - Deborah Fraser
Best Male Gospel Artist - Vuyo Mokoena (his wife was there to collect it, she was a bit emotional and referred to Vuyo in the present, saying she knew he was happy with the award)
Best Praise and Worship - Benjamin Dube
Best Producer - Lindelani Mkhize
Best Songwriter - Andile kaMajola
Best DVD - The Plain Truth
Best Gospel Instrumental - Condry Ziqubu (was LOL when he said he never thought people who drive skorokoros could win an award)
Best Gospel Video - Worship House
Best Newcomer - PMB Sound of Salvation (Tjo, you could swear they had been given the real crown by God, they were so excited they literally flew to the stage and spoke at the same time).
Best Selling Album - who else, Ncandweni of course.

Thanks Sno. I love Hlengiwe Mhlaba, i'm glad she finally got recognition. It was a brilliant idea to launch these awards. Gospel music was not getting the recognition it deserved!

@Snonoza
But WHY? Is it because the Awards were in DBN. Typically example of SABC towards KZN. As for Zanele she going places...im so proud of her. I really though she was going down when she left uKhozi FM but the sister has shoot up the sky. Well Done Zanele

Did anyone else notice that she sounds like she has a new accent?
what accent Golden Star??

Why are they called SaBC Crown Gospel awards if we can't even see them on SABC?
last week i watched the Superspot/PSL function , and i could see the professionalism SS has compared to the guys at Auckland Park,...

really , why would you call something Supersport Cup but you don't show it on Superspot ...??? maybe i got it all wrong, someone correct me here.

"@Tazzy I don't know how to explain it but she sounds different, South African still though!"

maybe because she used to speak Zulu on ukhozi fm, and you were used to that,,,as soon as she speaks english it's an "accent"

Beats me too. And the way they were organised, I really think SABC should have broadcast them. I ain't joking when I say they beat the SAMA.

Beautiful recap sweety, thanks for the lowdown. The feedback I got also said the show was great, they didn't take it as far as the SAMA's but they did admit its production was way better than the overrated stars of Mzansi.

<<<Why are they called SaBC Crown Gospel awards if we can't even see them on SABC?>>>
SABC 1 will broadcast the awards. Will find out the details tomorrow.
