Who'll Make The Top 10?

Here's what went down in Idols last night:

From the press release:

Last night the Top 12 Idols sang their hearts out for a spot in the Top 10 group that will move to the Ellispark Arena next week, to sing to a live band and in front of thousands of screaming fans.

Carla

First up to compete was a flu-riddled Carla Louw, with No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”. Dave called it an excellent start to the evening and predicted that she would be in the Top 10. Gareth said Carla “sounded 100%”, not at all like she was sick. Randall called it a very good pop performance. “I commend you,” he said.

Tonight the men judged without Mara, who had a previous commitment. She will cast her vote after seeing the show on television. Carla’s voting number is 086 22 777 13, or SMS “Carla” to 34680. As with all the contestants, these will be Carla’s voting details for the rest of the competition.

Jody

Jody Williams chose another Whitney Houston hit tonight, this time the upbeat “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. “Great to see you move out of your comfort zone,” Dave complimented her.

“I just saw some very different sides to Jody, and I liked all of them!” said Gareth. “You might want to give up the big ballads,” Randall advised. “You’re a much better pop singer than you think you are.” Viewers can dial 086 22 777 11 to vote for Jody, or SMS “Jody” to 34680.

Björn

Björn Blignaut went with “I Swear”, by All 4 One. “It’s all about what the fans want and you clearly deliver what they want,” Dave admitted. Gareth said Björn was back on form after a lacklustre performance last week. “I still believe you can be better,” Randall insisted. To vote for Björn, call 086 22 777 14, or SMS “Björn” to 34680.

Andriëtte

Andriëtte Norman turned the Bryan Adams ballad “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman” on its head. “You seem to be outdoing yourself every week,” Dave marvelled. Gareth said he could see how much thought she puts into every note, “and I love that.” Randall unequivocally stated that Andriëtte was “the best singer we’ve ever had in Idols.” Everyone who agrees can dial 086 22 777 06 to vote for her, or SMS “Andriëtte” to 34680.

Daniel

Daniel Büys performed his version of Michael Bublé’s version of “Fever”. “I find you to be quite a sensitive singer, in a good way,” Dave admitted. For Gareth, though, “it bounced right off me”. Randall conceded that Daniel had a tough act to follow, “but I missed the ‘snap’, the vibe of the song.” Vote for Dan at 086 22 777 09, or SMS “Daniel” to 34680.

PJ

PJ Simeoni chose to sing the Sinatra standard “Fly Me To The Moon”. “I think you’re an entertainer,” Dave admitted, “but can you win Idols?” Gareth said he “never saw anyone look so awkward yet do it so well.” Randall didn’t think PJ “has the depth as a singer to perform those kinds of songs.” PJ’s voting number is 086 22 777 05, or SMS “PJ” to 34680.

Yolanda

Yolanda Nabo chose the inspiring Gloria Estefan anthem, “Reach”. Dave was amazed. “You’re making life very difficult,” he teased. “I’ve liked you the whole way through, but maybe tonight is just not your night,” Gareth disagreed. But Randall thought “this was possibly your best performance thus far.” To vote for Yolanda, dial 086 22 777 01, or SMS “Yolanda” to 34680.

Sabelo

Sabelo Mthembu went classic with one of the most famous songs in the world, The Beatles’ “Yesterday”. “Unfortunately I don’t think that performance was good enough. This might be the end of the road for you,” thought Dave. Gareth thought it was merely “OK”. Randall agreed. “The magic was gone.” Sabelo’s voting number is 086 22 777 10, or SMS “Sabelo” to 34680.

Dominic

Dominic Momberg chose “Walking Away”, from Craig David. “You really are good,” Dave allowed, “but please just work that little bit harder.” Gareth thought it was “surprisingly good” and Randall said it was a “competent pop performance.” Dial 086 22 777 02 to vote for Dom, or SMS “Dominic” to 34680.

Tender

Tender Mavundla covered Toni Braxton’s “Another Sad Love Song”. “You’ve redeemed yourself,” said Dave. “Finally I’m vindicated – you were great,” Gareth praised. Even Randall seemed a bit overwhelmed. “Wow, that was adult, man”, he sighed. Tender’s number is 086 22 777 03, or SMS “Tender” to 34680.

Caroline

Caroline Borole’s song was “Show Me Heaven” by Maria McKee. Dave said she reminded him of Zamajobe. “I suspect you’ll have the same level of success.” Gareth warned her to “treat the sound with a little bit more respect,” though, and Randall thought she was too theatrical. To vote for Caroline, dial 086 22 777 08, or SMS “Caroline” to 34680.

Munro

And Munro du Toit closed the show with a rendition of Otis Redding’s “Mustang Sally”. It made Dave smile. “That was a lot of fun,” he admitted. “But be careful about falling into a ‘drunken karaoke night at the Dros’ kind of thing…” Gareth agreed that it was entertaining. Even Randall thought Munro’s energy would play well on television, but warned him to “focus a bit more on the singing.” Vote for Munro at 086 22 777 12, or SMS “Munro” to 34680.

Voting opened at the start of last night’s show and viewers can vote via landline, SMS, MXit or on the Idols website at www.mnet.co.za. The voting lines close during tonights live Results Show. (8 October) Next week sees the first Live Spectacular at the Ellispark Arena - tickets are available at Computicket.

I agree it wasn't Sabelo's best perfomance, but I do not think he's going to leave tonight. I think PJ is leaving and then I don't know who else. Remembger guys it does not have to be a guy and a girl, it can be two guys or girls, so anything can happen and who knows, it may be someone that no one even suspected that s/he would leave.
