Hello! Hopefully you can still hear this and haven't had your eardrums pulverised into an Idols trauma yet.
Here's the official summary from M-Net about what happened in last night's first Theatre Stage episode that narrowed down the Top 77 to a Top 32. At the end of it you'll find a who's who gallery listing of the 32.
Idols Theatre Stage Part 1Broadcast date: Sunday, 9 September 2007
The 77 contestants were immediately divided by gender into seven groups of girls and guys.
Kirsty Redman was the first person to win a Golden Ticket into the Top 77 and she was the first to audition in the Theatre stage. “Lets hope that today I sing from my soul and don’t forget the words,” she said from the stage. But unfortunately she did exactly that and, despite encouragement from her fellow contestants in the audience, Kirsty Redman became the first to leave her Idols dreams behind.
When five out of the seven were summarily sent home in the first group, it sent shockwaves through the rest of the contestants, who were nervously awaiting their chance to perform. The pressure nearly overcame18-year-old Basetsane Tholetsane, but she sang her heart out onstage and became one of only two to survive in her group.
Stylish Jessica Yallup had resorted to begging in Margate just to get in to the Theatres Auditions. “I’ve done lots of preparation since then,” she confided to Colin. “Obviously the stakes are much higher now.” But no begging was required this time as Jess joined five other girls in her group to make it through.
All in all 21 girls were eliminated by the time the girl groups had wrapped their auditions, and then it was the guys’ turn.
No-one had more riding on this audition than 25-year-old Jonathan Dreyer, who told Colin in Centurion that he had sold his car and all his possessions to pursue his musical dreams in Johannesburg. Regrettably, this was not the break Jonathan had prayed for. “Life goes on after Idols. Idols is just a competition, it doesn’t reflect who your really are,” he reflected sadly after being given his marching orders.
For 27 contestants, Day One meant the end of the dream. For the 50 who survived, the nightmare was just beginning.
As the sun set on the first day, it was time for the infamous Group Night. The following day contestants needed to perform in groups, taking turns to sing lead with the others backing them up, for the first time to backing music. This meant that the tired survivors only had the night to put together their own groups, learn their lyrics and rehearse their performances.
The lack of sleep and limited preparation time took its toll the next day - as it was designed to do. This is the phase that reveals true grit, as a relaxed and confident Caroline Borole and Duduzile Ndlovu proved when they sailed through their group audition.
As the saying goes: when the going gets tough, the tough turn pro, and this was true of Belinda Cherry, Rob Warren, Daniel Buys and Carla Louw, who turned in a concert-worthy performance.
As always, the Theatre Stage ended in the notorious Results Rooms.
50 contestants were split into five rooms to await the judges’ verdict. There could only be good news for 32 of them. The judges delivered their results to four groups, ending in the fifth final room that only had five contestants.
Two were told they didn't make it and three were given good news. These final places went to Peter Moss, Munro du Toit and Jody Williams from Cape Town.
