SABC3's primetime soapie Isidingo was the big winner at the inaugural South African Film and Television Academy Awards (SAFTAs), taking home 12 of the 13 awards it was nominated for.

Isidingo won the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Direction and Best Ensemble Cast awards in the Soapie categories, as well as the Viewer's Choice award for Best Soapie.

The Viewer's Choice award was based on SMS votes from the public - Isidingo received 6,808 votes.

Another SABC3 show - Hard Copy - took the most awards for Drama (7), winning the coveted Best Drama award as well as Best Director (Tim Greene), Best Actor (James Ngcobo) and Best Supporting Actor (Jody Abrahams).

James Ngcobo was the only actor out of all categories to win two individual awards - in addition to his Best Actor for Drama he also won Best Actor in a TV Comedy, for his role on Stokvel.

Stokvel edged out City Ses'la by six wins to five in the Comedy category, although the latter won the Best Comedy award.

Tsotsi topped the Feature Films categories with five wins, including Best Feature Film and the Best Actor award for Presley Chweneyagae.

Top Billing was awarded Best Magazine Show and The Weakest Link won the Best Game Show award.

The inaugural SAFTA Awards were held on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.

There were 35 craft, documentary, short film and student award Golden Horn winners on Friday, and 39 awards were handed out on Saturday in the categories TV Drama, TV Soap, TV Non-Fiction, Comedy, Feature Film, Documentary, and Special Awards (Film of the Decade and Outstanding Contributor).

Producer Anant Singh was awarded the Outstanding Contributor award and Film of the Decade went to Mapantsula (1988), despite the fact that it was not made in the last decade.
