Can A Leopard Change Its Spots?

No, and neither can Tokkie. The more things change the more they stay the same and it’s so true in Tokkie’s case. Inge and Emma are so desparate to believe that the man they love can change from a shady businessman involved in dodgy deals to a prominent businessman involved in successful legitimate deals. Boy, how wrong they are proven especially the gullible Inge!

Summary for last week:

Monday 16 October

This entire episode is dedicated to the comical rescue mission that Altus, Mandla and Aggie undertook in their attempt to save the helpless Paula van der Lecq.
All the scenes were shot outside the studios at the Montague mansion, indoors and out.

Mandla, Aggie and Altus are in front of the monitor scanning the pictures of the men in the park. By putting two and two together, Mandla figures out that Clifford Montague paid a hit man to kill his wife and have now kidnapped Paula to prevent his alibi from being exposed as is evident in the pictures Paula has. He wants to immediately go to the police but Altie says there’s no time to waste, his beloved Paula’s life is at stake. The three of them rush out but not before Aggie pops her pepper spray into her handbag.

Paula is still tied up and we learn that the thug’s name is Dan. He gets irritated with Paula’s incessant babbling when Clifford approaches her politely and she asks him for a drink. She’s given a strong whisky.

Meanwhile, a big truck in the road further delays Altie and we see Aggie and Mandla hanging out by the window of the Conquest shouting at the truck driver to move it.

Paula tries to play hard ball with Clifford and makes as if she knows everything. He tries to negotiate with her dangling a huge juicy carrot in her face by offering her 2 million rand in exchange for her laptop and memory card. Off course, the naive Paula’s eyes goes wide in disbelief that she could make big money so easily, she tells him 3 million and they have a deal. He agrees threatening to kill her if she doublecross him.

Dan is not a happy chap and moans at his boss for offering her such a huge amount when she would’ve obviously settled for far less. Cliford spells it out to Dan that he’s not stupid to pay her that kind of money, it’s just a ploy to get what he wants and thereafter dispose of the nosy journalist.

Before Altus reaches the Montague mansion, he swaps places with Mandla and lies in the backseat with Aggie. It’s part of their plan not to be seen as they enter the driveway.

Mandla finally arrives at the mansion and Clifford sees him through the window and goes out to meet him upfront. Mandla tells him he wants to do a follow-up story about crime in general and Clifford invites him inside.

Dan ties Paula tighter and put masked tape over her mouth to keep her quiet. Aggie and Altie quickly try to make their way inside. Dan goes to the living room where Mandla is and tells Clifford they have to get going. Mandla tries his best to stall but does a very poor job of it looking like a scared chicken and this makes Clifford suspicious.

Aggie and Altie make their way to the various rooms looking for Paula. She falls over sitting on her chair and this causes the chandelier in the livingroom to shake. Clifford pretends it’s the cat and Dan goes to check it out.

Dan is back in the room with Paula and pulls her up. He’s just about to smack her when Altus bursts through the door and the two come to blows. The usual comical fight occurs between the two and Aggie unties Paula. She helps Altie to put Dan in the cupboard hitting him with her bag and using a poker to shut the door.

When Clifford gets to the room, he nearly beats Altie to a pulp before Aggie comes to the rescue tripping him up and is all prepared to zap him with her pepper spray but Altus pulls her out of the room with Paula.

They all rush out like mad fools finally making their get-away and leaving a frustrated Clifford Montague looking on from the balcony.

That was definitely one of the funnies episodes of 7de Laan I’ve seen in a long time. As charmed_dude said, only 7de Laan can make drama into a dramedy.

Tuesday 17 October

The young folks are all at Paula’s flat awaiting her return. Just then Aggie, Paula, Mandla and Altus burst in at the door looking the worse for wear and they tell the others what really went down at the Montague Mansion and the events leading up to it. As usual, all Mandla and Paula can think about it is who will get that front page scoop.

It seems that Robyn knows all the right people and she’s inviting them all to her launch party. She tells George that she’ll be borrowing Danny to help her with all the arrangements for the party.

Aggie rushes off to the Times offices when she realises that they had completely forgot to send the articles to the printers the previous day. Paula and Mandla are still harping on about the front page when Nellie walks in looking none too pleased.

Upon hearing the unbelievable story of Clifford Montague, Nellie feels torn between his two journalists and tells them both to have their stories on his desk so that he’s able to make a decision which one to pubish.

The story of Paula’s kidnapping drama spreads around Hillside. Tessa shows the others another front page story written by Nellie involving Tokkie Le Roux and the shady Imnayama Bay deal with the senile Mr Vermaak. As Vince reads it out, Ryno excuses himself, probably off to tell his wife.

When Ryno get to the Boekwinkel, Emma is already reading the article which names her father who’s denying any irregularities in his dealings with Mr Vermaak. Emma is upset and it’s all directed at Nellie for seeing an opportunity to create sensation.

Inge has seen the article when Tokkie walks in. She shows him the article and he strongly denies everything being said about him. Inge is too upset and runs to the back.

Nellie scolds his two journalists for putting themselves in harms way but praise them for their bravery, guts and determination. He chooses Paula’s article since it has the human element and she boasts to Mandla about grabbing that front page story from right under his nose. Naturally Mandla is not happy.

Robyn introduces herself to Ryno at the Boekwinkel and with her false smile one got the impression she was flirting with him. When Danny steps in to give her progress report, she praises Danny for her hard work and gives her the jacket that Danny was admiring at the Boutique.

Zinzi delivers a takeway to Nellie when Tokkie walks in to the Times offices. The two men get into it and Tokkie lashes out at Nellie for publishing false accusations. Zinzi tries very hard to stay and listen but Nellie forces her to leave with a deadly stare. Tokkie threatens to take Nellie to court for defamation but Nellie shouts back that he prefers it that way so that the mess can be cleared up once and for all.

Everybody is at O’malleys honouring Aggie and her bravery in the hostage drama. Paula and Altie were having their own private party back at the flat. Tokkie walks into O’malleys and everyone decides to leave not wanting to be in the same rooms with him. They’re a very judgemental group living in 7de Laan.

Inge walks into the bar and sees Tokkie, confronts him about the truth and he tells her everything he knows about the deal, well surely not everything only what he wants her to hear. Inge says she doesn’t believe in him anymore and walks out.

Wednesday 18 October

Paula with Hillside Times in hand, boasts to anyone within earshot about her article appearing on the front page. There’s a big picture of her on the front with the headline reading “Top Journalist Involved In Kidnapping Drama”. Off course Paula is behind it all, she somehow doctored the article and spun things in her favour after Nellie edited her article.

Vince and Mandla duck and dive to avoid bumping into Tokkie. Inge pulls Tokkie aside and apolgises for what she said the previous night. She says she believes he was unaware of Mr Vermaak’s senility and that the Imnyama Bay deal was a bogus one. The two decide to find out the truth so that Tokkie’s reputation can be restored.

Matrone is in full preparation for her meeting with President Mbeki but gets her history all mixed up much to Ryno’s amusement.

Mandla and Aggie are not impressed with Paula’s constant bragging about the kidnapping drama. They feel upset that Paula refused to acknowledge them in her article and Aggie feels particularly hurt. Mandla tells her she’ll never get a front page story again and Aggie quits as Paula’s PA.

Nellie goes to the Boekwinkel to work and Emma gives him the cold shoulder. She later lashes out at him for ruining her father’s reputation and Nellie tries to reason with her but Emma is in tears saying she wish she’d never met her dad.

Paula bumps into Nellie at the Boekwinkel and he thanks her for the article saying the paper is selling like hotcakes. Paula uses Nellie’s praise to her advantage by requesting time off to come to terms with the terrible ordeal she’s just been through, preferably at a game lodge or spa. Nellie surprises her by agreeing to it but her plan backfires when Nellie insists on sending her to an adventure camp. Paula can’t seem to get out of going.

How does the Afrikaans saying go “Het jou Grootbek”

Alyce tells San Mari and Tessa that the Boutique is not challenging enough for her anymore, the lawyer refuses to listen to her ideas and she’s on the lookout for other job prospects. San Mari tries to cheer her up by saying Kurt Darren will be at the club and they all must go.

Mmm, Kurt Darren? It’s been awhile since they had artists at the club, about time too.

Nellie feels bad about the Imnyama Bay article, no kidding, a journalist feeling bad for printing a juicy story, well Nellie is a man of integrity and Charmaine tells him that but he feels he should probably have waited before printing the story. Too late now Nellie, the damage has already been done.

Paula is in a crisis about the adventure camp and goes to the Deli to stuff her face with all kinds of yummy delicacies. Later she tries to suck up to Mandla by offering him a bribe but Aggie knows Paula all too well and tells Mandla that Paula will do anything to get out of not going, the camp with all its extreme activities is pure torture for the likes of Paula van der Lecq.

Tokkie tells Inge that he’s going to Cradock to get to the bottom of this deal with Mr Vermaak. Just then a very official looking gentleman enters looking for Tokkie (funny how they know just where to find him). He says he’s a detective and he needs to question Tokkie about his dealings with Mr Vermaak and the Imnyama Bay land.

Thursday 19 October

The Terreblanches are having breakfast and Madel does not seem her normal self. Dezi and JH joke about Matrone teaching everyone table manners and no matter how they try to reach Madel, she seems to be in a totally different space.

The girls are all excited about seeing Kurt Darren at the club, they’re shopping up a storm preparing to get his autograph. San Mari says she met Kurt at the Aardklop Festival and the two of them clicked immediately. She tells the girls that she’ll arrange for them to get an autograph from Kurt but the girls just laugh at her not believing that she really knows Kurt all that well.

Marko is back from the Cape and pops into the Deli. Vince tells him the latest regarding Tokkie and Marko says he’ll speak to his buddy in the Police Services.

Dezi shows Alyce the sample invite for Robyn’s party which still says KDL which is possibly a mistake, it should read Kyriakis De Swardt, right? Just then Robyn walks in wanting to know what Dezi wants to tell her. Dezi shows her the invite querying the namechange and Robyn surprises her by saying that she has no intention of changing the name because she does not want her name to be displayed so prominently. Why, what does she have to hide?

Tokkie rocks up at the Boutique and tells Inge that the detective questioned him about his dealings with Mr Vermaak thinking he’s in cahoots with Lindie Maree. Inge shows her support for Tokkie and he feels upset that nobody else is willing to trust and believe in him.

Nellie tells Charmaine that the Police are investigating Lindie Maree and everybody that had dealings with Mr Vermaak. Emma steps in at that exact moment, hears the last part and questions Nellie who tells her what he knows. She excuses herself and Nellie tells Charmaine he did what he had to do.

Dezi and Felicity discuss her latest designs for Felicity Fashions. Dezi does not seem enthusiastic and tells Felicity she was really longing to become a partner in KDL but Felicity tells her she will get an opportunity someday when she’s ready.
Our Dezi has really become an ambitious young businesswoman, who could’ve guessed she started out as a waitress at Oppiekoffie.

Ryno tells Emma what the Police found out about her dad and encourages her to go speak to him and sort things out once and for all. Emma is stubborn not seeing the sense in doing that because her father will just tell her what he wants her to hear.

Inge questions Marko about whether he could find out anything about Mr Vermaak’s case. Marko denies knowing anything and when Inge phones Tokkie’s guesthouse she learns that he’s checked out. She tells Alyce that Tokkie has once again chosen to run away leaving her high and dry.

Robyn tells George that she’s going away to Nairobi and will be returning the day of her party. George suggests postponing the party but Robyn assures him that she’s not missing this party for anything. Can’t she and her fake smile just stay away for good?

Inge is just about to start mourning her relationship with Tokkie when he phones to say he’s checked into the Eisenhower Hotel because he had to get away from all the calls he was getting at the guesthouse. Inge is so overjoyed to hear from him and tells him how much she loves him, he tells her not to cancel their travel arrangements.

Friday 20 October

Nellie is early the next morning at the Boekwinkel to see Emma but Ryno tells him she’s decided to stay home. Nellie informs him that his contact in the police (looks like everybody knows somebody in the police) told him that Lindie Maree has been arrested for fraud and warns him that Tokkie could possibly be arrested very soon. He automatically assumes that Tokkie was in cahoots with Lindie.

All the young folk are excited about the Kurt Darren performance at the club and they start teasing San Mari for having a wild imagination about her and Kurt being buddies. They decide to put their money where the mouths are by placing bets that Kurt will not only recognise San Mari but also serenade her, quite a tall order to fill but San Mari is pretty confident.

Marko and Vince discuss the Tokkie deal gone wrong and how they were nearly involved in the whole sordid mess. Vince makes his way over to daddy dearest and thanks his father for literally saving his butt. Mmm, very big of him to admit he was wrong.

When Marko goes over to Inge to enquire about Tokkie’s whereabouts, she lashes out at him for betraying Tokkie. Zinzi comes over and has the gall to ask Inge about Tokkie and she scolds her for being such a busy body gossip and to mind her own business. When Zinzi leaves Marko apologises for the hurt Inge’s experiencing and she tells them they’ll regret thinking that Tokkie is guilty. Later Inge gets call from a man claiming to be Tokkie’s business partner in the Imnayama Bay deal.

Ryno finds Emma in Oppiekoffie and tells her that her father will be arrested shortly. She feels hurt and betrayed that her father has once again lied to her. Nellie and Charmaine are watching from the front and Charmaine feels sorry for both Inge and Emma and implies that Nellie should not have written the damning article.

Inge gets more calls from people claiming to be Tokkie’s partners in the Imnayama Bay deal and the evidence points at him being guilty as sin.

Madel seems to be completely losing it and Dezi and JH assume that she’s still in shock about the death of Nicholas Scott.

Everyone’s at the club waiting for Kurt Darren who suddenly appears and gets the crowd going.

Inge makes her way to Tokkie at the hotel and tells him that his partners have been phoning leaving messages for him. He lies to Inge telling her its his partners from the previous deal and he promises to take her away from all this mess.

Back at the club, San Mari has still not been recognised by Kurt and she blames it on the bad light. The guys further up their bets and when Kurt comes again on stage he notices San Mari and dedicates his next song to her causing everyone’s jaws to drop to the floor. San Mari beams from ear to ear as she dances to the sounds of Kurt Darren.

Marko goes over to Tokkie and the two of them get into it about his shady deals. Marko warns Tokkie that he’ll soon be arrested saying that he’s warning him as a favour to Emma and Inge. When Marko leaves, Tokkie quickly gets on the phone and makes a booking for a single flight to London.

Once again Inge will be eating Tokkie’s dust as he makes his getaway!
