The nominees for the inaugural South African Film and Television Academy (SAFTA) Awards have been announced and local comedy City Ses'la is the show with the most nominations - 14.

It narrowly beat out rival comedy Stokvel, soapie Isidingo and drama Hard Copy, all of which received 13 nominations apiece.

Judging panels consisting of industry professionals, journalists and academics spent four weekends viewing and adjudicating over 400 entries ranging from the country's best feature films, short films, documentaries, television dramas, sitcoms, soapies, magazine, news and actuality, wildlife, children, variety and reality programmes.

All programmes judged in the above categories had to have been produced and completed or originally aired or publicly exhibited for the first time between 1 February 2003 and 30 September 2005.

The winners will be presented with the Golden Horn, the official SAFTA Trophy, on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October 2006 at the Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.

The main awards ceremony on Saturday 28 will be televised live on SABC2 from 19h30 to 23h00, with live crossings from the Red Carpet from 16h00.

Other shows to score big in terms of nominations are drama Zero Tolerance (12), soapie Generations and drama Tsha Tsha (10 apiece) and yet another comedy, Pure Monate Show (9).

In the Feature Film categories the Oscar-winning Tsotsi topped the nominee list with 10 nominations, while Dollars & White Pipes received 8 nominations.
