A lesson is learnt this week as we see an obsessed and slightly psychotic Renate, unable to accept that Nicholas loves Madel, she takes matters into her own hands when she decides to shoot her enemy. In a last scene of bravery for the woman he loves, Nicholas jumps into the line of fire and is shot.
Summary for last week:
Monday 18 September
Neef Gert is still locked outside the flat begging and pleading for Cheryl to let him in. When Paula asks what’s going on, he pretends that he and Cheryl are playing a game.
The others join in the “game” by telling Neef Gert what to tell Cheryl. Eventually Cheryl softens up and thinks Gert is saying all these nice things as his unique way of asking her to marry. She excitedly opens the door and tells Gert that her answer is yes, she will marry him. Gert is gob smacked as the others applaud them.
Vanessa confronts Felicity about her feelings for Xander and although Felicity tries to deny it at first, she eventually admits her true feelings for him.
Nicky phones Madel and tells her it’s very important that he sees her. He doesn’t realize that Renate is standing behind him listening to every word. Madel is a stubborn old gal and refuses to give in to his wishes.
Hilda can’t bear facing Neville and slips quietly out of Oppiekoffie, Paula watches her.
Matrone meets with Danny and it’s clear that Danny is in charge of this campaign and she will not allow Matrone to manipulate her into doing things the “Matrone way”.
Renate tells Nicky that his mind is occupied with Madel and asks why he needs to speak to her so urgently. Nicky is irritated with Renate for going to see Madel and tells her to stop playing games.
Gert and Cheryl are shopping up a storm, ok it’s actually Cheryl doing the shopping and Gert is just tagging along like a good little fiancé. By the way, just how much money did they win at the casino, they’re just flashing the cash lately.
Cheryl broadcasts the news of their engagement to anyone within earshot and she invites everybody to the wedding of the decade, it’s her first you know!
She tells Alyce to let Felicity be ready to design a wedding dress to rival that of the late Princess Diana. Go tell her yourself, you pretentious wannabee!
Tokkie sees Emma (don’t you just hate their scenes) and tries to make amends but Emma refuses to budge. Sweet Emma just cannot find it in her big heart to forgive her father for the mistakes of the past, she’s too afraid of getting hurt.
Get a life Emma, your marriage to Ryno is so perfect you just have to go looking for some drama and your poor father has to bear the brunt of your unforgiving heart. Get over it now!
Unfortunately for Emma, Inge overhears the argument and the two of them get into it. Inge blames Emma for her and Tokkie breaking up and being unwilling to forgive her father for the mistakes of the past. Inge phones Tokkie and arranges to see him that night.
George and Carlos discuss KDL and Carlos asks George how he would feel if he, Carlos, came in as a partner.
Oh for heavens sake, Carlos, must your finger be in every pie? Just where does he get money from to invest so left, right and centre?
George says he’ll think about the offer and Carlos says he’ll check with his lawyer to make sure his affairs are in order. Dezi does not look happy.
Tokkie goes to see Inge at the boutique and she tells him she understands why he left, she loves him and wants to be with him irrespective of deals falling through. The two kiss and make up.
When Paula comes knocking at Hilda’s flat bearing gifts, Hilda is immediately suspicious. Paula is forced to tell her that she is the one who paid Maria to send the postcards and she will make sure Hilda’s good name is restored.
Nicky barges in at the Terreblanche house and confronts Madel about what she meant when she said she made a mistake. It’s really eating away at him and Madel wimps out, telling him she can’t handle this and runs upstairs.
Tuesday 19 September
Madel receives an upsetting phone call about a trivial matter and she confides in Dezi about what Nicky wants from her now that he’s back. Dezi is very understanding about her mother in-law’s feelings, thinking of her own first love.
Cheryl tells Hilda to do the flowers for her wedding as she fancies her ikebana. I really think Cheryl needs to move out of Hilda’s flat, first the weird combination of oysters and chocolate sauce, now the ikebana, what’s next Cheryl wearing a “serpie” round her neck?
Cheryl gives Gert a not-so-subtle reminder that her wedding finger still needs an engagement ring and she hints at expecting an expensive ring, anything less than 3 carats is an insult.
Inge is happy and inlove again and tells Felicity about her and Tokkie being back together again. Xander drops by, flower in hand and the two start speaking about Vince again.
George tells Karien that Wilmien phoned to enquire as to when her money will be available and he mentions that Carlos is interested in investing but he has doubts as he’ll be doing all the work again.
Vince is back and he overhears (as I predicted) Zinzi and Tessa discussing the love triangle between him, Felicity and Xander.
He angrily marches over the boutique and finds Xander and Felicity in a cosy scene. He confronts them both and before Xander can throw punches, Vince brushes him aside to confront Felicity about her deception and being a hypocrite.
San Mari gives Madel a message which was delivered to T&T. It’s a note from Nicky inviting Madel to meet him at Huismans Restaurant at eight.
Dezi asks George how a new partnership will affect her and Altus and George assures her that nothing will change. How sure are you about that, Georgie boy?
Danny and Matrone meet to discuss the latest developments regarding the campaign and for the first time, the two seem to understand each other and what they expect from one another.
Once again, Nicky lies to Renate about meeting with the university people when he’s actually going to meet with Madel. When you’re cheating on your partner it becomes second nature to spin a web of lies and soon it will catch up to you Nicky, your wife is no fool.
Madel is all dressed up but has doubts about meeting Nicholas. When Dezi invites her to a movie, she’s in a total state of confusion and declines the invite. She feels the need to read Nicky’s letter once more.
We see Nicky anxiously waiting for Madel at the restaurant and just when he’s about to give up, she walks in.
Renate is in her hotel suite pacing the room nervously. She suspects Nicky is with Madel when she tries to call him and gets his voicemail, she tries Madel’s home number but there’s no reply. Instinctively, she knows that her husband is with another woman, her arch rival Madel Terrebanche.
Back at the restaurant Madel and Nicky have so much to catch up on and it’s clear that they are both still very much inlove with each other as their true feelings are reflected in their eyes.
Look, I’m a sucker for love and romance but not at the expense of another person getting hurt especially when two people are married as in the case of the Dezi, Jan Hendrik and Theuns love triangle but somehow I’m gonna forgive Madel for her indiscretions purely for the fact that we get to see a different side of her and besides, how long has it been since she got it on with a man?
Wednesday 20 September
Renate and Nicky are having breakfast together and she asks him about his meeting the previous night. He seems rather preoccupied and when Renate asks him to accompany her on a shopping trip, he makes excuses about having to work.
When Renate leaves the room to go lie down, (she was feeling slightly sluggish), Nicky grabs the opportunity to phone his lover. Madel is sitting in the Boekwinkel when Nicky phones, she tells him not to complicate matters unnecessary. Ryno hears the distress in her voice.
Danny goes all out for Matrone’s campaign, she’s in it for the win thereby proving herself to George. With the way things are going at KDL recently, I doubt Danny will even have a job there when she finishes her studies.
Gert has to count his pennies now that he’s engaged to be married to Cheryl, the girl is going all out with wedding preparations.
Maria checks with Paula to see if she’s done anything to clear Hilda’s name. Paula makes her way to Nellie and tells him she needs to arrange a meeting with all the judges to let them know the full story behind the allegations. She turns to Aggie for assistance.
Tokkie tells Inge that he has decided to hit the road for Emma’s sake and asks her to go with him. He tells her she need not answer right away.
Madel goes shopping at the boutique and Nicky finds her there. He pushes her to accept that they’re meant to be and she tells him to meet her at home. The two lovingly touch each other, unaware that Renate is watching them from the arcade.
Cheryl is at the boutique being measured for her wedding dress. She tells Felicity that she wants only the best silk even if it must be imported. She plans to be on every magazine cover and only the best will do for her.
Vince finds Felicity at T&T and demands an explanation for her betrayal. She tells him she’s finished with him and that his ego has taken a knock. He begs for another chance dismissing her feelings for Xander.
Paula meets with Madel, Nellie and Dominee Potgieter at Madel’s place. She gives them a pathetic story about investigating the allegations and her sources revealed that Hilda was framed. She tells them she cannot reveal her sources but she wants Hilda to be cleared of any false accusations. They eventually fall for Paula’s story but Dominee looks suspicious.
Inge goes to Emma to apologise for their fallout the previous day, the two forgive each other and make friends again. Inge tells Emma that she and her father have made up and asks Emma to forgive her dad. Emma says she’ll do her best.
At Madel’s place, Nicky and Madel reminisce about the day they said their goodbyes at the airport all those years ago. They both start taking the blame for their breakup and Nicky tries to convince Madel to give their relationship the chance it never had. He tells her his heart never belonged to Renate (ouch) and the two embrace.
Renate is knocking back the drinks at O’Malley’s when Ryno walks in and joins her. In her drunken state, she tells him about her loveless marriage and pronounces that they will not get away with it, “over her dead body or theirs”.
Shew, things are heating up and where will Madel’s infidelities lead to? What is Renate prepared to do to keep Madel away from her husband?
Thursday 21 September
Just how many times must we watch Madel reading her love letter from Nicky? Dezi walks in and sees her looking very emotional, Madel speaks in riddles about her current situation with Nicky but it makes no sense to Dezi.
Xander tells Charmaine that Stefan Arendse’s case will soon be heard in court and that Charmaine will possibly be called in as a witness. Charmaine doesn’t know how to persuade Vanessa to forgive Stefan.
Dominee Potgieter approaches Aggie, looking for Neville Meintjies. Apparently he urgently needs to discuss the issue of the DD competition. Aggie runs to Paula to inform her of the latest development and Paula rushes out to save her own hide, thinking she’s been caught out.
Renate leaves message after message for her husband. She’s in a total state, being rude to Tessa, dropping her cell phone and pushing Emma out of the way.
Dominee finds Nellie in the Boekwinkel and tells him that everything Paula said about Hilda being framed is true, the culprit is Netta Nortje. Paula and Aggie come rushing in and tells them it was not Matrone. When Nellie demands to know who it was, Paula lies and says it was Mrs Pienaar, she hates Hilda and is bent on destroying her. Aggie has Paula’s back and agrees with everything, the matter is soon laid to rest.
Renate is clearly going off her rocker, she shouts at Nicky when he steps into the room and tells him that they have to leave Hillside before their lives are ruined. She says she can’t live without him and he leaves, telling her he can’t talk to her when she’s in such a state.
Cheryl goes to Felicity and tells her that she’s chosen another designer since Felicity does not spend enough time on her, she will be going to Yolande. Naturally, Felicity is more relieved than upset.
However, she is upset about the Vince situation and when Xander walks in, she’s forced to tell him about Vince asking for a second chance. Xander sees red and wants to go after his brother.
Nicky returns to an empty hotel suite, or so he thinks. He phones Madel and the two agree to meet at her house to discuss Renate’s suspicions about them. Unbeknownst to Nicky, Renate is right behind listening in.
We see Renate again at O’Malleys, drowning her sorrows. George and Karien are also there and they’re discussing KDL, as usual. Kabelo joins them but accidentally bumps into Renate, she angrily storms out.
Nicky and Madel are discussing their lives when they were apart. Nicky tells her how he came to marry Renate and confesses that he has and always will love Madel. Meanwhile, Renate is at the door hearing everything the two has to say.
She suddenly gets a wild look in her eyes.
Just how did Renate get into Madels’ house without being heard? Why is’nt Madel’s doors locked, you would think with Sandra roaming around freely and bent on destroying the Terreblanches, Madel would be more security conscious, this is South Africa afterall!. Only in the soaps, I tell you!
The entire gang is at the bar, discussing Renate’s odd behaviour. Xander drops by, takes his brother aside and warns him to stay away from Felicity since she’s not interested in him anymore. Vince thinks Felicity is just trying to make him jealous by being with Xander. This guy is so unbelievable, wish Xander had beaten his “slap lyf” into shape.
Unaware of Renate eavesdropping at the door, Madel tells Nicky her true feelings for him, how she missed him, longed for him, blah blah blah! Unable to bear listening to another word from either of them, Renate puts a gun to her head.
She loses her courage to shoot herself or maybe she didn’t want her brains splattered all over Madel’s neat house, whatever her reasons, she’s suddenly right there in the room with them pointing the gun right at Madel.
She tells Madel that there is no way she will steal her husband from her, she fires a shot just as Nicky jumps in front of Madel. Nicky drops to the floor and Renate points the gun at Madel again, there’s a look of utter disbelief on Madel’s face.
I think Madel is more shocked about the fact that she didn’t even get it on with Nicky, no hanky panky whatsoever, now she has to die for him?
Friday 22 September
With the gun still pointed at her, Madel drops to her knees begging Nicky to hang in there as she doesn’t want to lose him. All the while Renate looks coldly at the scene in front of her, she’s totally in a daze as she silently leaves the house. It looks like Nicky has breathed his last breath.
Gert tells Maria and Oubaas that he and Cheryl will be going on the dreaded shopping trip, the engagement ring. She’s literally sucking him dry as she demands money for lingerie and goodness knows what else. He’s forced to give Maria money for groceries as well.
George and Altus are waiting for Dezi in Oppiekoffie when they get a call from her. She tells them about Nicky who has been shot dead and Zinzi is all ears, without a moment’s hesitation she’s off to spread the news to anyone who will listen.
Neville and Mandla are quick to investigate the story as its front page news and Charmaine shows concern for Madel.
Paula shows Hilda the article she wrote about Hilda’s great cooking skills and announces that Hilda’s good name has finally been restored and she can hold her head up high. The girls are all excited about Hilda’s new dishes.
Neville questions Dezi about the shooting that took place but she has no answers for him. George and Altie rock up and Dezi tells them about Jan Hendrik’s car being broken into. He phones to say that he’ll be driving back as all the flights are fully booked.
Why this information about Jan Hendrik losing his briefcase, cellphone and wallet is important, I have no idea. What I do know is that things which seem trivial and unimportant in 7de Laan has some bearing on a storyline later, lets see if this will come up later.
Charmaine pops in to see how Madel is doing. Madel tells her that Renate was very unhappy and she was about to lose everything so naturally she was desperate and she Madel, knows exactly how that feels. I wonder if she was referring to Stef’s affairs and hating Sandra with so much passion that she herself did desperate things.
Paula is forced to bring Nellie up to speed with the Vince, Felicity and Xander drama, he’s shocked to hear that his sons have come to blows over a girl.
Ryno, Emma and Dezi discuss Renate and the drastic measures she took in shooting her own husband. Ryno tells them what Renate said to him at O’Malleys and it dawns on them that Madel and Nicky were inlove and Renate was fully aware of this. They talk about life being too short and how things can change overnight and Emma realizes that it’s time to forgive her father.
She makes her way to Inge and Tokkie in the boutique and she finally apologises to her father and tells him that she would like to give their relationship a second chance. The two finally make up. At least one good thing came from Nicky’s sudden death.
Charmaine tells Vanessa about Stefan’s case coming up and she completely changes the subject, not wishing to discuss him.
The young folks of Hillside are at O’Malleys, discussing Renate and the shooting incident. By the way what is Altus doing there without his partner in crime, Paula? The two have literally being glued to each other since making up a few weeks back now he has the sexy San Mari sitting between him and Marko.
Ok, so they’re all sitting there when suddenly Renate walks in and orders a drink. Kabelo can’t believe his eyes and tells the others she’s sitting right there at the bar. They are all shocked and tell Kabelo to phone the police to report that she’s there.
Gert and Cheryl are back from their shopping trip and Cheryl is sporting a huge ring on her finger, in my opinion it looks ghastly. Maria hands Gert a letter from Hendrina’s lawyer and he’s shocked when he reads the contents.
Apparently Hendrina is asking for a fortune in maintenance money and Maria reminds him that 10 kids cost quite a penny, she also wants Gert to have the kids over weekends and holidays so that she can rest. Seems Cheryl is having second thoughts as she looks at her ring. Can you imagine Gert and Cheryl with 10 kids around them, what a sight! Good for you Hendrina!
As is typical of SA police, the young people are still waiting for them to arrive and just when it looks as if Renate will be leaving, the police come strolling in casually. Kabelo, in typical Judas style points to Renate and she’s finally arrested for killing her husband.
A very sad and lonely Madel reads another letter from Nicky which ends with Nicky telling her that he will love her till the day he dies.
Shame poor Madel, she never does get a second chance at true love and real happiness. This storyline went way too quick, Madel didn’t even get a kiss let alone some action in bed and she nearly lost her life?
Tune in next week to see if Cheryl will dump Gert in fear of looking after his 10 kids occasionally, will Madel and Renate come face to face again and what will the future of KDL be?
