Season 4

90 Plein Street promises large dosages of drama, intrigue and exhilaration when Season 4 of the series returns for 26 weeks. Named after the address of South Africa's House of Parliament in Cape Town, the series has followed the personal and political intrigues around Dineo Nkgatho, an ANC MP trying to balance her private life, the demands of a broken family and her party loyalty.

This series traces the turbulent fortunes of President Dineo (Thembi Mtshali-Jones), MP Nathan Jantjies (Terence Bridgett) and community organiser Lerato Maduna (Precious Makgaretsa).

In this fourth season, Dineo – now President of South Africa – faces a rebellion from within the ranks of her party. Meanwhile, a charismatic new player, the fiercely idealistic Khayelitsha community organiser Lerato Maduna, is coming to the fore.

Nathan Jantjies plans to manoeuvre Lerato into winning the Western Cape for the President. In the brutal game of high-stakes power politics that follows, will Lerato be able to hold on to her high ideals?

President Dineo has pinned her reputation on the success of the NDP which must pass the scrutiny and gain the endorsement of the next party conference. If the proposed NDP fails, she fails and her leadership becomes an issue.

The NDP is met with controversy and criticism. The president must fire a minister as a disciplinary measure which triggers a rebellion against the president.

Unlikely help comes from a relatively new MP Nathan Jantjies, with deep roots in the Cape Flats. He promises he can hold the line for the President in the province with ulterior hopes that by doing this he will earn acknowledgement in the form of a seat on the cabinet.

His promise is met with scepticism from the president so he sets out to wrest a ward in Khayelitsha. He encourages a young woman, Lerato Maduna - well known in the township as a community organiser but with sceptical traditional politics, to stand - and she wins the nomination contest.

Lerato is an idealist; she believes that a firm commitment to the welfare of the people is all that's required of a good political leader. What she doesn't realise is that by unwittingly serving the interests of Nathan, her patron and mentor - and ultimately President Dineo - politics are interconnected.

90 Plein Street is not without the drama of love and heartache; politicians and activists are also human.

Season 4 is produced by Born Free Media for SABC Education. The head writer was Richard Beynon with other writers including Tymon Smith, Colin Olifant, Zeli Zulu and Thuso Sibisi. The season was directed by Roy Zetisky, Jahmil Qubeke and Khalo Matabane and produced by Carolyn Carew, Khalo Matabane and Tsholo Mashile.
