Description

Cheers is an American television sitcom created by James Burrows, Glen Charles and Les Charles and set in the Cheers bar (named for the toast "Cheers") in Boston, Massachusetts, where a group of locals meet to drink and have fun.

The series originally aired in the USA on NBC from 30 September, 1982 to 20 May, 1993. There are 269 half-hour episodes (and two specials) in 11 seasons.

After premiering it was nearly cancelled during its first season when it ranked dead last in ratings. However, Cheers eventually became a highly rated television show in the United States, earning a top-ten rating during eight of its 11 seasons, including one season at #1.

Cheers originally aired in South Africa on SABC3. It later aired on DStv's M-Net Series channel.

Season 10 premiered on M-Net Series on Saturday 22 November 2008, at 21h30. There are 25 episodes in the 10th season (the 25th episode is a 60-minute special, and may be shown as two episodes).

Synopsis

Cheers is a bar in Boston, owned by Sam, a former Redsox baseball player.

His waitresses are poles apart - there is Carla, the smart mouthed sarcastic mother of many and Diane, the snobby jilted fiance who clashes with Sam. Woody is the country bumpkin bartender that is the butt of many jokes.

Cheers clientele are more often at the bar than at home or at work. There's Cliff, the postman, Norm the beer guzzler, Frasier the haughty psychiatrist and other regulars.

Much later, Sam sells the bar so that he can sail around the world. The new manageress, Rebecca hires Sam after his boat sinks. Their personalities clash and a love-hate relationship grows.

With all these wacky characters, it's no wonder they go where everybody knows their name.
