Maggie is a nurse at a busy New York Hospital whose life is thrown upside down when on one rainy night her sister Jenna abandons her newborn, autistic daughter at Maggie's house - and disappears.
Maggie is forced to raise the child but almost six years later Jenna returns with a strange new "husband", Eric. They attempt to take the child back but Maggie refuses. That night Jenna and Eric kidnap the child.
Despite the fact that Maggie has no legal rights to the child an FBI agent - John Travis - decides to help her find the child. He is convinced the abduction has something to do with the occult, as the child shares the same birthdate as numerous other children that have gone missing.
The autistic child clearly has 'special powers', which the forces of evil have waited centuries to harness.
It becomes a battle between good and evil for the girl's soul, which must be won in order to save the world from damnation.
