Lewis (known as Inspector Lewis in the USA) is a British television detective drama made as a spin-off from Inspector Morse and set in Oxford. Kevin Whately reprises his character Robbie Lewis, who was Morse's sidekick in the original series.
The series began with a one-off pilot which was first broadcast on ITV on 26 January 2006. Three more two-hour episodes were made, which began airing on 18 February 2007.
A second season has been commissioned by ITV.
Lewis premieres in South Africa on DStv's Hallmark channel on Monday 28 January 2008, at 21h00.
Lewis is a follow up to the Inspector Morse series.
Five years after Morse's death, Lewis - now promoted to inspector - returns to his old stomping ground of the university city of Oxford after an attachment on the British Virgin Islands.
Even before Lewis can get home from the airport, he and his new, much younger colleague Hathaway are diverted by the flashing blue lights and police activity of a murder scene, centred on the death by a single bullet of an American college student.
Another student, Danny Griffon, is suspected of being involved - and he had a brush with the law some years previously, investigated by a certain Inspector Morse.
Meanwhile, Lewis's new boss, Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent, has plans to move him off the front lines to a training assignment, which he is determined to resist.
