About the Show

Vat 'n Sit is a South African television sitcom created by Mandla N and produced by Black Brain Pictures which taps into a common South African slang phrase used to describe couples who move in together before marriage - in this instance a humble man who has to impress a royal wealthy family if he is to have any chance of marrying their daughter.

With the current South African stats of 13 women to 1 man, it's easy for a man living in South Africa today to find a girl, fall in love and marry her, right?

Not when you are a humble man in love with the daughter from a powerful family...

Meet Thomas Gumbi, a humble man hailing from a township in Newcastle in love with Mpho, last born and only daughter of the Ledwaba family, a royal wealthy family, the Sepedi version of the Setswana royal Bafokeng family.

Thomas would love nothing more than to marry the love of his life, but her family has rejected his lobola.

Armed with big dreams, baking talent and a true heart but no business knowledge, Gumbi has plans to become a successful entrepreneur and a powerful man, and he has identified the gap in the market that he will service through his cake baking business: weddings, funerals and parties.

He believes that his business will make him a wealthy entrepreneur, and enable him to win the Ledwaba family's respect and acceptance. Thomas will go to any lengths for their approval and often gets himself into all kinds of ridiculous situations.

This he believes will see him being the wealthy entrepreneur that will win Mpho's family's respect and acceptance.

The sitcom taps into real South African issues as the concept of "Vat 'n Sit" is a common South African slang phrase used to describe couples who move in together before marriage. The concept is no longer seen as forbidden.

The show stars award-winning South African comedian Trevor Gumbi, who plays Thomas Gumbi; and Liopelo Maphathe, who plays Thomas' love interest, Mpho Ledwaba.

Also featured among the cast are Nyembezi Kunene who plays Thomas Malume; Christopher Kubheka plays Skhumba, Thomas' old friend and township hustler; Chumisa Cosa is Angy, Mpho's disapproving best friend; and Bexta Ndabalime plays Abimbola.

Produced by Black Brain Pictures, the series was written by Tumi Masemola, Mandla N and Nicci Fourie. Mandla N was the creator and director and the executive producers were Tumi Masemola, Mandla N, TT Mbha and Lucy Witts.
