About the Show

Colour TV is a South African satirical variety comedy series produced by Brand Bernie, Bonngoe Productions and Jungle Works and described as "a variety comedy show for Coloureds by Coloureds", which follows a Saturday Night Live-style format of recurring sketches and commentary on popular topics of the day.

The series premiered on SABC2 on Friday 8 July 2011, at 19h30. New episodes broadcast weekly. There are 13 episodes in the first season.

Synopsis

Colour TV loosely resembles the format of Saturday Night Live, showcasing the best talent South Africa has to offer including David Isaacs, Quanita Adams, Kim Cloete, Robin Adams and Terence Bridgett.

Colour TV is a satirical comedy production celebrating the nuances of South African Coloured culture, presenting their view of the world.

Colour TV is a platform inviting South Africans to laugh along at a demographic who are comfortable in exploiting their idiosyncrasies to bridge a socio-economic divide with an emphasis on "lightening up".

The sequence of spoofs and parodies launches full-steam ahead into international and homegrown topics told through the eyes of a previously marginalised group in a fun and entertaining manner.

Colour TV is a collaboration that involves some established as well as lesser known names in television, drawn from the very demographic for whom the series is created.

Executive Producers Bernhard Baatjies, (Brand Bernie), Pepsi Pokane (Bonngoe Productions) and Levern Engel (Jungle Works) are the creative team behind the series.

The coloured sector makes up 9.1% of the South African population and traditionally this audience has been under-serviced.

South Africa - brace yourself, phone jou ma en sê vir haar, there's a new variety comedy show for Coloureds by Coloureds.

Segments

SOAPIE

Give a Little Love

Story based on two feuding families – The Jones' and the Pietersens'.

Loosely based on the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet.

Christian (Jones) and Muslim (Pietersen) Families.

Julie Jones and Raafiq Pietersen fall in love.

Feuding between the two families arose from an argument between Oupa Jones and Oupa Pietersen, the source of the argument is unclear at first - religion? A woman? Or Fafi numbers?

Voice Over - David Isaacs
Rafique - Wayne van Rooyen
Anwa - Duncan Johnson
Wayda - Esmeralda Bihl
Layla - Quanita Adams
Lester - Anthony Wilson
Muriel - Nazli George
Julie - Terri Ann Eckstein
Justin - Bjorn Blignaut
Oupa Jones - David Isaacs

ACTUALITY

Raak Wys

Driven by the overly zealous Mrs. Adams, the consumer affairs show is about taking on the world and righting all wrongs – particularly in light of the new Consumer Protection Act.

Think Isabel Jones played by June van Merch.

Special Consignment

A parody of the actuality programme Special Assignment.

Special Consignment will focus on various current affair issues each week (eg. The Coloured Action Committee pays tribute to Khuli and Jimmy; how ancestors may hold a new allure for Coloureds; how evidence shows that communities may be complicit in the drug situation; and how, unlike in other communities across the world, the phrase "excuse me" could often mark the start of a massive argument).

Starring Eloise Cupido and Hein de Vries

LIFESTYLE

Kuier

Pasella, but focusing on real people not necessarily celebs.

Inpirasie stories: an inspirational feature of someone who has done something remarkable in their community.

Het d'jy geweet?: little known facts related to Coloured history and customs.

Holiday Hot Spots: anecdotal holiday hotspot review.

A community focus – weddings, anniversaries, matric dances, etc.

Female presenter: Quanita Adams
Male presenter: Irvin Damon
Tyren: Travers Solomon

GAMESHOW

Wil D'jy Broke Wees?

Somewhere between Who Wants to be a Millionaire, The Weakest Link and Million Dollar Cash Drop, this is the only game show featured in the Colour TV Schedule.

A team of two people with a pre-existing relationship is presented with R1,000,000 in R50 notes.

The team must risk the entire amount on each of several multiple-choice questions.

The contestants are a veritable microcosm of South Africa's Coloured community – with the bulk of the regions being represented.

At the end of each show, the contestants are interviewed behind the scenes about their game experience.

Gameshow Host: Quincy Fynn

Characters/Gameshow Contenstants:

Merlin Balie
Quanita Adams
Duncan Johnson
Terri Ann Eckstein
Kim Cloete
Travers Solomon

REALITY

My Simple Life as a Kredashian

Centres around the antics of the Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie of Gauteng's upper middle-class Coloured community.

Brooke and Taylor Kredashian deliberately place themselves in "fish out of water" situations, struggling to do manual, low-paying jobs such as cleaning rooms, doing farm work, serving meals in fast-food restaurants, working in an old age home and working as SOS Village counsellors.

They don't always cope, but their reactions and the way in which they handle these "foreign" experiences, is living proof that comedy can be brought to an audience outside of the traditional sitcom format.

Terri Ann Eckstein: Brooke Kredashian
Jade: Taylor Kredashian

TALK SHOW

Late Night with Terence

Loosely based on the UK show The Graham Norton Show.

Hosted by Terence Bridgett.

Studio-based.

1 Guest per show – celebrity/sport icon, politician, entertainer

Weather

In the land of Colour TV, weather is important for only 3 reasons: (a) how it will affect your hair; (b) what you'll need to wear; and (c) how it will impact your social activities (plan for indoors or outdoors).

Studio based.

Financial Update

Financial indicators are current and reflect issues that touch on the lives of ordinary people e.g. "taks", fuel and food prices, toll roads, etc...

Jitz sport covers every conceivable sport under the sun, including dominoes, ballroom dancing and card games.
