John Hawkes is an American actor best known for his role as Bugsy in the 2000 feature film The Perfect Storm; and as the Jewish merchant Sol Star on the HBO western series Deadwood, from 2004-2006.

He also played the role of Greg Penticoff in two episodes of the first season of 24 (2001). He also played the role of Dustin Powers on the comedy series Eastbound & Down.

Hawkes was born John Marvin Perkins in Austin, Texas, the son of Patricia and Peter Perkins.

He co-founded the Big State Productions Theatre Company and appeared in the group's original play, In the West, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

John starred in the acclaimed Me and You and Everyone We Know, which received wide praise and was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the Camera d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hawkes has made guest appearances in numerous television shows, including Northern Exposure, Wings, Touched by an Angel, Millennium, Nash Bridges, ER, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X Files, The Practice, and Taken.

Other films he has appeared in include D.O.A. (1988), Scary Movie (1989), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Home Fries (1998), Rush Hour (1998), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), Hard Ball (2001), Identity (2003), Miami Vice (2006) and American Gangster (2007).

He has also acted in a number of made-for-TV movies, including Sweet Poison (1991), Roadracers (1994), Cool and the Crazy (1994), Shaughnessy (1996), Nathan Dixon (1999) and Strange Frequency 2 (2001).

John currently lives in Los Angeles where he writes, records and performs music with his band, King Straggler.
