Amanda Tapping is an English-born Canadian actress best known for her role as Samantha Carter in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, from 1997-2007.

She took the place of Torri Higginson on Stargate Atlantis as the new Atlantis expedition commander, from 1 January 2007.

Tapping was born in Rochford, England and raised in Toronto with her three brothers.

She has guest starred on such series as The X-Files, Dues South, Forever Knight, Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues, The Newsroom, Millennium, and The Outer Limits, and was a series regular on the Disney series Flash Forward.

In 1997 she was cast as Samantha Carter in Stargate SG-1 and has reprised the role every season.

Her TV film credits include Lessons in Love, Remembrance, and Degree of Guilt. She has also appeared in feature films, including Booty Call, The Void, and Rent a Kid. 

A graduate of the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Art, Tapping has performed in such theatrical productions as Steel Magnolias at the West End Theater, Look Back in Anger, Children of a Lesser God, The Taming of the Shrew, Noises Off, The Lion in Winter, and The Shadow Walkers.

In addition, she co-founded the Canadian comedy troupe Random Acts. 

Tapping is an avid reader and writer as well.
