News Shorts - Yoh!

YOH! Heroes, Scream and Nashville star Hayden Panatierre died suddenly at the age of 36 on Sunday 16 August. Police are investigating and no cause has been disclosed. This comes three months after the release of her memoir in which she alleged she went onto a yacht with someone she trusted and was encouraged to get intimate with a 30-something famous British singer who was lying on a bed. She said she fled and hid. She was 18 at the time.

YOH! Doyenne Helena Bonham Carter's out of The White Lotus Season 4. According to HBO: "it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set." Laura Dern's replaced her, in a rewritten role.

YOH! Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte - Walter White's son Walt Jr - says he's paid more in taxes on his earnings from the series than he did from the actual show! His business manager scammed him. He'd write her cheques for the IRS but she didn't submit them. Kept the money for herself and sent him fake confirmations that his taxes were paid. Five years later he was hit with a massive tax bill that took him 10 years to pay. Moral of the story: always pay your tax yourself.

YOH! Streaming platform SportyTV announces that it's secured the pay TV rights to all 104 games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The platform's been in other African countries since 2022 and launched in SA last year as a free streamer. Now it's becoming pay TV. No word on how much it's going to cost. What does this mean for the World Cup rights on DStv?!

YOH! Is iThonga ending after Season 1 on 27 February 2026 or is there a Season 2? We've asked Mzansi Magic who tell us they're still waiting to hear. This is unprecedented - for there to be no answer on what's happening with the future of a DStv soapie that's reaching the end of a season within a month.

YOH! BB Mzansi housemate Cia's been hospitalised after her emotional collapse and exit (see below). According to MultiChoice, the production's organised accommodation for her family in Joziburg so they can be closer to her - they live in Pretoria.

YOH! Turns out the 12 Warner Bros. Discovery channels on DStv AREN'T part of the deal with Netflix. The plan was that these channels would become a separate company next year but now Paramount Skydance wants them included in the new militant deal they're fighting for. Hostile Takeovers, Billions, Succession. It's happening in real life.

YOH! The new second season of Showmax Original telenovela Outlaws starts on Mzansi Magic on Saturday 22 November at 20h00 - only five days after it premieres on Showmax. The first season took a year to reach Mzansi Magic! The time gap between Showmax and DStv premieres keeps getting smaller. What happens next? Our guess: Showmax will disappear and be absorbed into DStv Stream.

YOH! BET's Black Gold suddenly extends to double bills from Monday 22 December 2025 in the build-up to what they're calling the "season finale". Or do they actually mean the channel's finale?! It makes no sense to rush off episodes over the festive season. We suspect the channel's on the brink of closure with everything going at Paramount (see below).

YOH! Formula 1 ditches ESPN in favour of Apple TV. It's been broadcasting on ESPN in the US and will move to Apple exclusively for the 2026 season in a five year deal, meaning it'll no longer be available on cable TV, only streaming.

YOH! Sibongile & The Dlaminis star Nsikelelo Mthiyane (Sibongile Number 2) headlines SABC1's new telenovela Amalanga Awafani. Translated: either there's a Sibongile Number 3 on the way or the show's over, cancelled with Duma Ndlovu's other properties in the wake of his tax scandal. The latter seems most likely.

YOH! South African production house Rapid Blue now owned by BBC Studios. Founded by Duncan and Kee-Leen Irvine in 1993, the company's resume includes Family Feud, SA's Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars and Come Dine With Me South Africa. This is why we think the Dancing with the Stars revival could air on BBC Lifestyle on DStv (see below). OR could air on S3 too, in the BBC Primetime slot.
