Murder In The Laan, Is Charmaine Really Guilty?

Felicity is troubled by the news she receives from the clinic. When Charmaine pushes her, she stalls and as Vanessa walks into the room, Felicity breaks the news that Aubrey has died.

The news of Aubrey’s death spreads quickly through Hillside as everyone feels sympathy for Vanessa and Charmaine.

Once again Paula is at the Hillside Times offices, bullying Aggie as she cancels all the interviews planned for the day. She phones the candidates using various excuses why they can’t come in to be interviewed.

Aggie takes Neville’s wallet to T&T and tells him about Mandla going to Nigel (Paula’s wildgoose chase) and that the worm virus is back.

Stefan brings Aubrey’s things home from the clinic and makes all the necessary arrangements for the funeral to be held the next day. Rather quick, ain’t it, what’s his hurry in having the funeral so soon after the death?

Paula finally confronts Neville and being Paula, she tries to worm her way back into his good books. He finally relents giving her job back with a stern warning that she’s on probation for three weeks and he’ll be keeping an eye on her.

I’m surprised Neville has’nt found his way to Charmaine yet, what with the baby dying and all, you would think that’s where he would be, right?

Things are very grim in the Beukes household as Vanessa blames herself for not being at her son’s bedside when he died. Charmaine consoles her daughter.

It’s the day of Aubrey’s funeral.

Xander comes by and offers his assistance to Charmaine and Vanessa.

Charmaine thanks Stefan for all the arrangements he made and paid for and again we see that look in his eyes.

Paula is back at work and Mandla can’t believe she managed to convince Neville to give her another chance.

Neville comes in and is clearly dumbstruck when he finally hears the news of Aubrey’s death and funeral. Hard to believe Nellie, when it’s like the only thing everyone is talking about.

Nevertheless, he tells Aggie to cancel all his appointments as he makes his way to Charmaine’s house.

Xander is sensitive to Felicity’s feelings as she tells him about the loss of her own child, giving up Lee-anne and now losing Aubrey. Vince interrupts them and offers his support to Felicity.

Dammit Vince, your timing stinks!

Neville arrives at Charmaine’s and is full of excuses as he apologises for not being there for her. Now would be a good time to shut your mouth Nellie, its clearly not appropriate to make it all about you, just be Charmaine’s shoulder to cry on, that’s all she needs.

Everyone makes their way to the funeral service.

Karien asks Altus to give Paula a lift to the funeral. Paula feels very emotional as she tells Altie how sad she’s feeling for Vanessa.

For the first time we see a different side to Paula, she’s genuine and sincere as she breaks down in front of Altie.

I must say for a little boy who was’nt that long in 7de Laan, the emotional scenes played out at his funeral was one of the saddest I have ever witnessed in a soap.

It does not even compare to Tau’s funeral in Generations which was a rather grand affair but the emotion was sorely lacking.

When the 7de Laaners do it, they do it good and damn I must admit that I had some tears in my eyes too. I was really caught up in the storyline.

There was not a dry eye in the church when Vanessa stood up to say her final words about her son and to thank everyone as the viewers get to have their last look at a picture of the adorable curly-haired, dark eyed little boy.

At the graveside, Vanessa and Charmaine finally break down in tears as they say their final goodbye.

Nurse Bettie, Aubrey’s nurse at the clinic has a look at the heart and lung machine data and is shocked when she sees something irregular.

Stefan says farewell to Charmaine and Vanessa as he’ll be flying back home to the USA that very same day. He gives Vanessa a journal to jot down all her feelings about Aubrey prior to his illness.

Vanessa asks Hilda to speak to Vince about getting her job back at the deli as she seems to want to get her life back on track rather than mope around.

She arranges with Marko to drop off all Aubrey’s things at a Children’s home and Charmaine tries to convince her to give it some time but she refuses. I think Vanessa is in denial and she’s not giving herself time to grieve.

Matrone continues to bribe Mandla and Hilda is jealous. Hilda decides to open a soup kitchen which could appear on the front page of the Times.

Madel arrives home and tells Jan Hendrik to convince Dezi not to take chances with the operation and he finally tells his mom to stop meddling since it’s ultimately Dezi’s decision.

Aarrg Madel, just put a sock in it, will you!

Nurse Bettie is distracted and can’t get Aubrey off her mind, she finally tells Nurse Jackie that her conscience is bothering her to such an extent she can’t just ignore what she saw on the machine data.

It appears that someone definitely switched off the machines, waited about five minutes and switched it back on again. Unfortunately or is that fortunately for little Aubrey, there was no heartbeat.

Aubrey did not die from natural causes, he was MURDERED!

Madel, in all her meddlesome glory tries to get Dezi to change her mind about the operation but she too fails as Dezi tells her that although she has doubts, she can’t not take the chance, as it will haunt her forever not knowing the outcome.

Before Charmaine goes to bed, she imagines she hears Aubrey crying.

The police come knocking at the door at the Beukes household. Felicity opens and the inspector asks for Charmaine who happens to come out of her room at that precise moment.

They tell her they’re taking her in for questioning in the murder of Aubrey Beukes.

Marko is on the phone the next morning with the police, claiming Charmaine’s innocence but they tell him they can keep her for 48hrs questioning.

Is this true, I did’nt even know this but off course I’ve never been questioned by SA Police before.

Vanessa cannot believe that the police suspect her mom when Aubrey died naturally.

Now that Paula has her job back, she’s pulling out all the stops to try and win her hunky Altie back.

It’s the day of Dezi’s op and Madel wants to be with Dezi at the clinic but she politely refuses and tells her to be there when she wakes up rather.

The news of Charmaine’s “questioning” by the police spreads rapidly through Hillside.

Neville phones the police and demands to speak to Charmaine. He’s eventually put through and once again he’s need to help her by offering to get her lawyer is not received well.

Charmaine insists she does’nt need a lawyer if she has nothing to hide. Good for you Charmaine, you’re being naïve if you think it’s that simple, but good for you.

Matrone’s exercise programme makes the front page news. She proudly boasts to Oom Oubaas and suggests he joins her programme but Hilda wants to hear none of that.

Mmm, not much happening in Hillside if the antics of a bunch of senior citizens is the topic of the day.

Hilda is busy with her pot of soup for the homeless of Hillside and she demands Mandla be there to take some pictures.

There’s some strange concoction she puts into the soup and she forces Danni to taste it.

Things are not working out as Paula planned with regards to the deep philosophical article she writes and reads out to Altus.

He is not impressed with her use of the Afrikaans language and leaves her abruptly, much to her disappointment.

Hilda comes back disappointed, her soup pot is empty but for the wrong reasons. It seems the homeless and hungry were not that hungry if they knocked over the whole pot and I know it was no accident.

It seemed only one homeless man was willing to try her soup as the others all claimed it smelled funny but the man who risked it got such a coughing fit, it was the only newsworthy pictures Mandla could take.

Emma and Ryno visits Vanessa, Neville also stops by and Marko gives them the news regarding Aubrey’s death.

Charmaine spends the night behind bars.

Early the next morning, Marko fetches Charmaine at the police station.

Marko has really fitted in nicely at the Beukes’, dontcha think? He’s so handy to have around.

Felicity waits for Charmaine but Vanessa can’t bear to face her mom so she dashes to her room.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for, for a heck of a long time is finally here. We get to see if Dezi will regain her sight.

The doctor is ready to remove Dezi’s bandages and just then Jan Hendrik’s cellphone rings. Instead of switching off till after his wife’s big moment, he chooses to answer his phone and misses it all.

The bandages are off, we see Dezi slightly out of focus but its getting clearer as her eyes settles on a man standing at the edge of her bed. We know it’s the other doctor but Dezi seems to thinks its Theuns as she says his name out loud.

What is it with Dezi who can’t seem to get over her first love, Theuns? Will we be seeing him in the near future, will he be the final nail in the Dezi and JH marital coffin? She’s been mentioning his name way too often lately, what are we to think?

Anyway Dezi is able to see clearly and Jan Hendrik finally comes in to hear the good news.

Inspector Muller is questioning the waiters at Oppiekoffie with regards to Charmaine’s comings and goings on the day that Aubrey died.

He questions Felicity who tries very hard to convince the no-nonsense police inspector that Charmaine would never have done what she’s suspected of doing.

Things don’t look good for Charmaine at all as the inspector is determined to nail her.

Vanessa and Charmaine discuss Aubrey’s death and Charmaine tries to convince Vanessa that she would never have switched off the machines no matter how he was suffering.

Vanessa bursts out that she herself thought about doing it but she never lost hope that Aubrey would eventually be able to live with the disease.

Paula gets information from Danni about the woman in Altie’s life. The woman happens to be in the arcade as Danni points her out. It seems as if Paula has some serious competition as we get a look at blonde bombshell Bianca who happens to be a Tae Kwondo Champ as well.

Unknown to Paula though, Altie feels Bianca is making a nuisance of herself and cramping his style as he tries to wiggle himself out of a date by using his grandmother as an excuse.

Aggie and Marko can’t agree on the design for their t-shirts causing a frustrated Karien to blow them off. They finally realize they can’t afford to be too picky and Marko allows Aggie and Karien to choose the final design.

Dezi comes home from the clinic to a welcoming committee consisting of Madel, Carlos, Emma and Ryno, George and Altus as they celebrate her getting her sight back.

After dinner Dezi tells Jan Hendrik that she’ll be going away on her own to the Magaliesberg, things are so strained between them it remains to be seen how long their marriage will last.

Ryno and Emma, who’s sole purpose nowadays is to lend support to whoever needs it, goes to Charmaine’s house. Whilst there, the police come knocking again.

Inspector Muller is back and he arrests Charmaine for murdering Aubrey. As he reads her rights to her, (do we also do that in real life, like the Americans), Ryno tries to interfere but is put firmly in his place.

Vanessa’s eyes nearly pop out of her head, she’s so surprised by this turn of events but does she really doubt her mother’s innocence?

Do you?
