Beautiful people

Oh to be tall, thin and beautiful. How many “ordinary” women have wished this? If you can stand it, watch America’s Next Top Model on e.tv tonight at 9pm.

Tonight’s episode is roughly halfway in the season with just six females left in the running for the main prize of a modelling contract.

I’ve been watching this show since the very start and it’s funny how favourites pop up in the most unlikely of places. In the first episode, skinny Elise was not impressive at all. Now she’s a firm favourite of mine, outspoken and intelligent compared to the dogmatic, self-assured, self-righteous and just plain annoying Robin.

Adrianne, with her lazy drawl, appears to be a serious contender and I think there’s a determined model beneath her laid-back surface.

Shannon is surfer-girl cute, but her “I’ve never smoked, drank and I’m still a virgin” speech she gives at the drop of a hat, while admirable, may prove a hindrance when she gets to live in the “real” surreal world of top models.

Kessie is cute, and I still can’t figure out if her uncanny resemblance to Tyra herself will work in her favour or count against her. I’m too scared to go onto the website to find out who the sixth contestant is (in case of spoilers) but the fact she’s slipped my mind has to mean she’s pretty forgettable.

This is the very first season of the show created and hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks. It’s an entertaining glimpse into the lives of would-be models struggling to break into an industry where there’s always someone who has a better “look” than you.

Never mind double-strength lip gloss, it would seem you need to be as tough as nails to survive in this industry.
