Special notes

Oh... what's happening with Isono?

It's the first time that Isono's appeared in e.tv's Top 20 list since it premiered on the channel in April 2022.

But wait... it's actually in the Top 10 with 2,322,415 viewers and an audience share of 29.3 for its most popular episode .

More than Muvhango!

It's very strange that it's never featured before and suddenly it's right up the charts. It could be a once-off fluke this month because it happened on 16 June - more people would have been home for the public holiday and therefore been able to tune in at 17h00.

We'll know whether its numbers are a regular trend or not once we see the viewership figures for July.

Muvhango hits free fall in its 25th anniversary year

Muvhango lost over 500,000 viewers between May and June this year and it's lost a whopping 57% of its audience between last year and now.

In July 2021 it attracted 4,364,992 viewers, with an audience share of 39,7.

This month its viewership was 1,885,401 viewers for its most popular episode, with an audience share of 20.9.

This equates to 56.8% fewer viewers than in July last year, with a decline in audience share of 18,8.

Why? Loadshedding, yes, but what else?

Was this month's radical decline because of Vho-Mukondeleli's death or the Azwindini storyline in which he died and came back to life?

Let us know your thoughts.

Notable mentions

These three shows might not be topping the charts but they're attracting healthy viewership numbers so we're giving them a mention:

Makoti on SABC1

It's viewership of 1,940,645 viewers for its most popular episode in June cannot be snuffed at, especially seeings as its up against Scandal!

Is'phindiselo on e.tv

It atttacted 1,849,328 viewers for its most popular episode in June, with an audience share of 21.

Good numbers for a Sunday night at 20h00.

Murder She Wrote on SABC2 Daytime

Its viewership of 452,865 for a Wednesday at 14h00 can either be seen as a travesty or cool.

Travesty: The season we're seeing is 30 years old.

Cool: It's vintage TV, man.

I agree, load shedding had a huge impact on Muvhango and the numbers clearly show that (it managed to maintain the number 1 spot on the channel) Other factors may include VOD. I watch the show regularly but recently I've been watching new episodes on DStv catch up. I'm also noticing the numbers during the 08:30 repeat slot on SABC 1, it might be those who tune in on Imbewu. My main concern is where are the rest of the viewers from Imbewu as the show had more numbers when it was airing at 21:30.

Excellent post Tman_1. You raise some key points:

1. These documents from the Broadcast Research Council are becoming more and more unrepresentative of what's actually happening with a show's viewership because they don't take VOD into account, which has been increasingly important for a while already as people's viewing habits shift and change from linear TV to streaming.

We love "appointment TV" so it's sad that the sense of occasion and everyone watching together is shifting so much but it's a reality and these documents are going to need to take this account in order to properly represent shows.

2. The shift of Imbewu to 21h00 has been a major disservice to viewers, especially for those who loved it at 21h30 and Muvhango fans who want to watch both shows.

Sometimes it's a good move for a channel to put a popular show up against a popular show on a competing channel but in this case it really isn't because viewers are not benefitting from it.
