The home decor show Win a Home returns to SABC3 this September and the search is on for creative duos to take on the challenge of decorating three, new penthouse apartments.

The series has gone through various transformations of its own since it first started in 2014, changing from being a stand-alone show to inserts on Afternoon Express.

This time round the series returns to being a show of its own and will broadcast on Thursday nights at 19h30, starting on 20 September 2018.

The format for 2018

The show will be based in the Western Cape, with three Design Duo contestants decorating three identical penthouse apartments at the Paardevlei Lifestyle Estate in Somerset West to compete for a grand prize of R100 000.

Three of South Africa’s top home décor magazine editors will give inspiration and direction to each duo. Each of the three design pairs will be assigned a magazine title, who will guide them through the design process. Each magazine will do a spread on their Design Duos.

Who is the show looking for?

The show wants passionate designers, who have less than five years professional experience and who want to make their mark in the interior design industry.

Designers can enter with anyone they know so if you're a designer, you could enter with a friend, colleague, sibling, parent etc.

Important to note: at least one of the duo must hold a tertiary degree in design or a related creative field (i.e. architecture, fine art, product design, interior decoration, interior architecture, fashion design, art direction and similar fields).

Important must-knows for the Design Duos

You need to be over 18 to enter.

One of the duo must hold a valid South African driver’s license and have their own transport.

Both must be permanent, legal residents of South Africa.

Contestants must reside in Cape Town or be able to relocate to reside in Cape Town, as well as transport themselves to the development in Somerset West, for the duration of the competition.

They must be able to make themselves available full time for the duration of the Designer Challenge from 13 August to 10 December 2018.

How to apply

To apply you can e-mail the following info to

1. A photo of yourself and your design partner (it can be your mom, uncle, brother, sister, friend, boyfriend, husband, wife etc.)

2. 10 images in a PDF or Word document design portfolio of design work you have done in the past (mood boards, previous projects, plans, designs and so on)

3. An A4 mood board that is representative of your design style.

4. A short cover letter and bio including your names, ages, city you live in, what makes you unique, your hobbies and passions and contact phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

Application closing date: Friday, 27 July 2018 at 12h00.

You'll find the Terms and Conditions on the show's website here: Ts & Cs

What to expect after you apply

The production team will contact selected contestants for an on-camera audition.

The prize

The winning Design Duo will win R100,000.

Viewers will be able to enter a competition while the show airs and the winner will win one of the penthouses at the end of series - a penthouse of their choice. Each apartment will be valued at over R3-million once decorated.
