Special notes

World Cup mayhem

Uzalo, Skeem Saam and Generations appear in the SABC2 and SABC3 lists because of their move to these channels during the World Cup on SABC1.

As you'll see, the numbers are riddled with discrepancies this month. The Broadcast Research Council (who compile these lists) has erroneously included Generations twice in SABC1's Top 20 so we've left out the second instance in the Top 5s.

They've also included a bizarre non-existent show called "S3 2000-2159" as the second most popular show on SABC3 so we've left this of the Top 5 too.

None of the World Cup games have been included in SABC1's Top 20. There's no clarity from the BRC whether this is because none of them made the Top 20 list (which seems highly unlikely) or if they weren't included in the parameters when the list was compiled, unlike the DStv list.

7de Laan's wow moment

If you can't see the full listing: 7de Laan attracted a record breaking 4,252,344 viewers on Monday, 25 June.

Would you look at that... Just take a look at that! GTL punching above its weight in a channel that is said to be accessed by a few in the country. 6 MILL! Surely that is a record-breaking figure for SABC 3. Right? This is a show whose ratings were supposed to be in the toilet in 2015, according to the prophets of doom at the time. If this doesn't prove that GTL has a genuine viewership power throughout the spectrum, then nothing will. Here's a bold statement, if by a miracle, it is moved to multichoice it may get just over 4 million. I mean, even on youtube, it has put the views game in a chokehold and still squeezing.

Something's gotta give when it comes to Isidingo and SABC3 as a whole. Clearly the demographic they're targeting could not be bothered with this channel. Generations' numbers just proved that it is possible to have highly rated shows on SABC 3. I guess it goes with being a public broadcaster to deliver silly quotas that are meant to please phantom viewers.
