Hate speech vs free speech: where do you draw the line?

Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (20 November 2016):

Hate Speech: The Fine Line

Julius Malema recently appeared before the courts on charges of contravening the riotous assemblies act, linked to his public call for people to invade vacant land back in 2014.

He’s challenged the charges in the Constitutional Court raising the question of how we should police the fine line between free speech and hate speech. Carte Blanche analyses events that have led to a new bill aimed at preventing and combating hate crimes and hate speech.

Producer: Nicky Troll
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Researcher: Laura Byrne and Chwayitisa Futshane

Programming Living Cells

Imagine manipulating a bacterium to function like a camera, or to engulf and destroy tumours with high specificity. Similar to installing an app on a cell phone to give it new capabilities, cutting edge cell programming technology can now give living cells new functions - whatever function scientists desire.

Carte Blanche meets the biological engineers creating a programming language that allows living cells to be reprogrammed and who’ve made their technology available to all online.

Producer: Eugene Botha
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

NPA: The Next Chapter

After much bad press, the so called ‘captured’ NPA head, advocate Shaun Abrahams has seemed to regain credibility in recent days. But is it enough to save his job?

An exchange of heated letters between Abrahams and head of the Hawks Berning Ntlemeza has revealed just how unhappy Ntlemeza was about the NPA’s decision to set aside fraud charges against Pravin Gordhan.

Carte Blanche asks: just another twist in an ongoing saga, or could Abrahams follow the same route as his predecessors?

Producer:  Johann Botha
Presenter:  Devi Sankaree Govender
Researcher: Tony Beamish and Sinethemba Nogude

Making a Difference in Tiny Lives

The neonatal unit at Sebokeng Hospital, one of the largest regional hospitals in Gauteng, is the only unit taking in babies from the surrounding areas as well as patients referred from other provinces.

Adding to the significant patient burden is the fact that this neonatal unit has only been able to accommodate babies up to 28 days old, compromising their care thereafter.  But there is hope.

The Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust’s new sophisticated Infant High Care Ward is saving tiny lives.

Producer: Diana Lucas
Presenter: Derek Watts

Arianna Huffington

She is the co-founder of the Huffington Post, and until a couple of weeks ago, was its editor-in-chief. Arianna Huffington has written 15 books and in 2011 Time Magazine listed her as one of the most influential people in the world. But this success came at a high personal cost. After suffering burnout, she directed her energies to educating the world about the power of a good night’s sleep.

About to launch a new business venture called Thrive Global, this week she was a keynote speaker at the Discovery Leadership Summit, and sat down for a candid interview with Carte Blanche.

Producer: Joy Summers
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
