SABC3's new local content quota: how it's playing out

You may have been wondering how SABC3 will be implementing the channel's new 80% local content quota without suffocating the channel with rebroadcasts of repeats of 90s rebroadcasts.

Today we can reveal the overall picture of the channel's plans, based on the latest July schedule.

Please note: these may change - we'll keep you posted if they do.

Here's a blow-by-blow:

Talk shows: noon, noon and night

Three new talk shows are being injected into the channel, starting with a Tween talk show on Monday, 4 July at 14h00. It isn't clear whether this is the final name or if it's going to get a proper one.

The second talker is an untitled late night talker that also starts on 4 July - at 22h00. It airs Mondays to Thursdays at the same time, with early morning repeats at 04h30 for insomniacs and security guards.

The third show is called Real Talk and it's the reason that Days of Our Lives has been yanked. It starts on Monday, 21 July in the current timeslot of Afternoon Express. Afternoon Express moves to Days' former timeslot at 17h00.

There's no word on who will be hosting these shows.

High Rollers bets on five

High Rollers scores an extra two episodes a week by extending to five days a week from Monday, 4 July. It remains in its current timeslot at 19h30.

Isidingo remains at 19h00 and Bold and the Beautiful remains at 18h00.

A High Rollers omnibus starts on Saturdays from 13h00, from 9 July - the Durban July airs the Saturday before.

Divas of Jozi replaces The Amazing Race

The Amazing Race is out and Divas of Jozi is in. There's no clarity from the channel as to what genre the show is but the title strongly suggests that it's a knock-off of the Real Housewives franchise. It could even be a reworking of the Real Housewives of Jozi that was planned years ago and then ditched.

Top Chef SA

A local version of the international cooking reality show starts on Tuesday, 12 July at 20h00. Now we know why M-Net canned MasterChef!

Social Reunion

This starts on Saturday, 16 July at 17h00 but this is the only the info. available. People are obviously going to reunite.

Sober Companion

This starts on Monday, 4 July at 21h00, after Divas of Jozi. Our guess is that it's a comedy or drama about a recovering alcoholic and their companion who tries to keep them on the wagon.

Jou Ma se Chef

A new Afrikaans cooking show that starts on Friday, 8 July at 21h00.

22h30 onwards

Every weeknight this timeslot has a mix of local and international series including CSI, Dr 90210 and Top Gear.

-----

So that's the situation - these are the key changes to the new schedule. We'll keep you posted as further details become available.

I am happy that HR will be extended to five days a week. The show has potential to become one of the best primetime serials.

Since this 90% local, SABC 3 is tiring now, always talk shows that are not even on high level, its just a waste of time, just like the Afternoon Express, 3Talk with Noeleen was far better than this, we need local dramas, if international series are yanked like that

I like have more local talk shows, I've always envisioned one with a live audience, hopefully one of the 2 has this. Days should have died along time ago, sorry to say! Nice to hear Dr 90210 will still be on hopefully they'll bring botched back some time, and make Wednesday exciting coz its as lame as well the lame.
