Why did he do it? What possible motivation could he have had for plunging to the depths of depravity? The only explanation I can think of is that he was driven mad by cowardice and was terrified of being voted off again. He couldn't cope with the prospect of people voting against him, so he took matters into his own hands by turning psycho on his tribe.
The fact that he raved on about how he wanted to be the author of his own fate strongly suggests this too and his antagonism towards Phillip was obviously because he felt the most threatened by him. The way he descended into it was mindboggling. How he started his beef with Phillip and how suddenly it turned into a full-on attack on the whole tribe as he lost perspective more and more.
At first I thought he was staging it and acting to get a response out of everyone but by the end I decided it was real. I suspect it started out with some acting and that things turned very real round about when he threw out the rice.
He literally created his own worst fear.
