It's hard to believe that the South African Music Awards will be taking place in a week's time. What happened to the hype of what was supposed to be the biggest awards ceremony in Mzansi?
I’m not sure if changing the venue from Sun City in Rustenburg to Monte Casino in Fourways, afterall a lot of people were not impressed by the “shocking” announcement.
We got over the venue change, then there was the controversy of the Awards nominees. First it was the size of the venue which couldn’t accommodate those who pitched. We forgave them and blamed it on the “gatecrashers.”
Secondly it was the nominations list controversy which was a headline of it’s own:
How the same artist was nominated twice in one category (The Parlotones – The Stars Fall Down and Life Design both nominated for Best Music Video of the Year); Chomee’s nomination for Best Urban Pop Album and Liquid Deep’s Best Newcomer of the year nomination. We are still shocked…
Now… All of those weeks later, what happened to the excitement?
In the previous years, there was always mass publicity. The SAMA's buzz was on every TV channel and radio station; and the build up to the event was always electrifying;
Does the public even know they are supposed to vote for the Record Of The Year?
According to the SAMAs Twitter Page, tickets went on sale a day ago. On Computicket, the tickets for the Fan Stage for the Awards ceremony are going for R220 and the Public After Party sells for R180. It seems like you'd have to buy both to attend the awards plus the afterparty.
What's your take on the whole preparation leading up to the South African Music Awards?
Do you think they will be a hit or a big miss?
Will you be attending?
Since Trevor Noah is not returning this year, who do you think will be the host?
