What's Happening To The SAMAs?

It's hard to believe that the South African Music Awards will be taking place in a week's time. What happened to the hype of what was supposed to be the biggest awards ceremony in Mzansi?

I’m not sure if changing the venue from Sun City in Rustenburg to Monte Casino in Fourways, afterall a lot of people were not impressed by the “shocking” announcement.

We got over the venue change, then there was the controversy of the Awards nominees. First it was the size of the venue which couldn’t accommodate those who pitched. We forgave them and blamed it on the “gatecrashers.”

Secondly it was the nominations list controversy which was a headline of it’s own:
How the same artist was nominated twice in one category (The Parlotones – The Stars Fall Down and Life Design both nominated for Best Music Video of the Year); Chomee’s nomination for Best Urban Pop Album and Liquid Deep’s Best Newcomer of the year nomination. We are still shocked…

Now… All of those weeks later, what happened to the excitement?

In the previous years, there was always mass publicity. The SAMA's buzz was on every TV channel and radio station; and the build up to the event was always electrifying;

Does the public even know they are supposed to vote for the Record Of The Year?

According to the SAMAs Twitter Page, tickets went on sale a day ago. On Computicket, the tickets for the Fan Stage for the Awards ceremony are going for R220 and the Public After Party sells for R180. It seems like you'd have to buy both to attend the awards plus the afterparty.

What's your take on the whole preparation leading up to the South African Music Awards?

Do you think they will be a hit or a big miss?

Will you be attending?

Since Trevor Noah is not returning this year, who do you think will be the host?

Jo I even forgot SAMAs exist. This time of the year we usually have a 'yello SAMA' advert every 5 mins.

My point exactly. Are there any ads out on TV on the SAMAs? Maybe I'm not seeing them?

@blackie...speculations are rife that Bonang will be hosting the show.

Regarding the size of the venue, there's a huuge Dome (kinda like the one for Standard Bank Jazz)  erected at Monte. It's been a week now and I think it's the venue for the SAMA's.

Oklay...i generally dont care.
But please enlighten a sista; What is so SHOCKING and dissatisfactory about the awards being held at montecasino as opposed to Sun city? Is it venue size?...im trully curious.

@Vesa Yeah. On the site they have pictures of a Dome that's been erected. That's probably it. It was the venue of the nominations announcement which was limited. Wow it would be great to have a female host, but normally they don't let females host alone, there's always a side kick. Mxm

@GA It became a tradition for the awards to be held in Sun City. It was also an anticipated function because of the glam that went with it; the travelling, some people would hire chaffeurs since the plan was to go wild; the galavanting from 1 hotel to the other; pool parties & Valley of the waves parties; generally the entire SAMA weekend was a BLAST. Having it in Fourways is not viable since a lot of celebs & music industry peeps stay therê. So, the whole SAMA "weekend" is gone, it will just be the ceremony.

True what you say Pru about the venue change thing. It is also one of the things that made people lose some excitement about SAMAs. Even though I've never been to the awards, I would get excited too about event when I hear people raving about the SAMA weekend saying what happens in Sin City stays there and all. But I don't want to scrap the whole thing maybe the actual event will be mind blowing. Let's wait and see. Mna I love the SAMAs its the event I always look forward to every year. I think the reason they always have a man hosting them its because they don't want the event to be like some kind of a gala dinner. They want someone who will make people laugh and throw some jokes about the people in the audience. And man are always capable of doing that. I also not mind having a woman being the host of the SAMAs but people mustn't cry about the show being a yawn and all. Because they are used to cracking up when its a male host. About the Y'ello ads I think they will start next week since the weekend of the SAMAs is next week. And I've seen celebs tweeting about what to wear to the event and stuff. I think the excitement is there but people are keeping it low.

unfortunately Bonang would be hosting it.
I am begining to feel she is being over exposed and i would have prefered a host with a comedy flair.
Tumi Morake would have been a fit.

anyway,

After commenting on this. I got an email from someone from MTN mentioning that they were promoting the song of the Year category around the country & the final leg was in Jabulani Mall. How weird is that?

Oh btw, this person promised to commenr and set the record straight. Clearly not. Congrats to Bonang, but why are women always co-hosts? It's not fair
