"Show more skin, show more skin!" the judges barked at Opeyemi, who was clearly uncertain of what she was supposed to have done differently.
She'd been given her outfit, been styled by the show's stylists and now the judges were criticising her for it when it wasn't her fault.
Thankfully she was saved and nutjob Omowunmi (whose name suddenly changed to Omowumi!) got the boot. But still, everything that happened with Opeyemi was all kinds of
wrong.
Sunday's Africa's Next Top Model followed the Top 9 through a sales challenge - each of them got a product that they had sell by striking a pose in a photo without the product being seen.
Everyone got a different theme to match their product, they took a bunch of pictures as per usual, the judges chose their best one and then assessed them on it - which is when the show took a turn for the worse.
Some of the girls were only judged on their poses whereas others were judged on every aspect of their styling too so there was no equal playing field at all. Those who were the best styled got favoured whereas those who weren't, didn't - which defeats the entire point of the competition!
I was gobsmacked as I listened to the judges' comments - felt like being in a Twilight Zone of events that make no logical sense.
Aamito - who always does well - was lambasted for not looking as if she was enjoying herself on the red carpet. She was told that her face looked good but that she wasn't enjoying herself enough on the carpet - which was obviously because of the terrible tracksuit pants she was forced to wear.
Her outfit was 100% inappropriate for the red carpet and she got judged on the overall look of the picture which wasn't her fault at all.
A similar thing happened to Michaela who was criticised for not showing her face enough in her Gillette/shaving advert which was ridiculous for two reasons.
Firstly, it was the
judges who chose the photo as her best picture - they took so many pictures of her, there must have been one with her face showing but it was the judges who chose the one with her looking away.
Also, it was for a shaving ad, so her legs were in the perfect position.
On the other end of the scale, Joyce - who ended up winning the challenge - was treated like a teacher's pet and got rewarded and praised for the styling. Oluchi even went so far as to say something along the lines of: "The bicycle, the uniform, the hair, your smile, it's all perfect." Only one component was her modelling, the rest was styling.
Unfortunately for Opeyemi, she had to market Oil of Olay and ended up the worst off. She was criticised for having too much hair in her picture - hair that the stylists had chosen to keep loose.
She was also criticised for not showing enough skin when there was no more visible skin she could realistically have shown in the set of pants she was dressed in.
Ultimately, the judges comments to her made no sense whatsoever. Also, I liked her pic - I thought that her pose was cool and that she did the best with what she had.
I don't know how to feel about the future of the show now ... I'm enjoying the girls and what they get up to etc but I'm feeling
very iffy about the way they're being judged.
