She was one of the best contenders last week and this week she plunged. Mozambican schmodel Safira got axed from Africa's Next Top Model on Sunday night after she suffered a monumental meltdown because of a couple of stairs.
The Top 10 went to Jozi for the episode to model in a fashion show for designer Thula Sindi and two other No Name brand designers who we didn't get to hear about.
The 10-sum had to walk the ramp, moving from a set of stairs down onto the red carpet and Safira - who has a fear of heights - had such a freak out she stormed out of the rehearsal. Which was obviously the
real reason for her elimination.
What does she do at shopping centres when she has to take an escalator? What about buildings and planes? There were only about 15 stairs - max! - and yet she was terrified so I don't know how she gets around generally. If you ask me her collapse had much more to do with the pressure of the competition than the non-existent height of the task.
Her meltdown could even have been the direct result of being exposed to some of the monstrous outfits they had to wear. The challenge was won by Slugbrows (Cheandre) who was dressed in what seemed to be a funeral outfit.
Some of the outfits were okay - I liked that yellow ballroom dancing dress someone wore but the majority were just too much. Too clumsy.
Also, the show should have clarified who else's designs they were wearing because you couldn't properly tell which were Thula's and which belonged to the other designers.
When it came to the judges' feedback on the challenge I was annoyed at the comments Aamito got. They criticised her dress, saying that it was too big over her hips and that it wasn't suitable to her but, but, but - it wasn't her fault that it looked like that! They never once mentioned that the schmodels had to choose their own outfits so the reasoning behind their criticism was illogical and unfair.
The one thing the outfits did was bring everyone closer together, united against the professional schmodels who were also part of the show. Even Omowunmi shed a tear when Safira left. She also managed to perform on the ramp better than the video fiasco she starred in last week.
Could be she's enjoying Rhulani's attentions and it's made her decide she wants to stay. Rhulani who's providing us with girl-on-girl lurve despite her protestations that she isn't bisexual. Rhulani who's proving to be more interesting in her poses. She also got lumped with a funeral dress in the task and managed to pull it off well.
As for Roselyn ending up in the final two ... it's that wig of hers for sure. The judges said that her ramp walk was too sexy and not high fashion enough but I definitely reckon it's her wig that's making her feel as if she isn't herself. Also, it must be
boiling. I want her to ditch it.
Next week: the Top 9 have to sell soap.
