Adrian Monk is a brilliant homicide detective working for the San Francisco Police Department. Monk grew up with obsessive-compulsive disorder, including a variety of quirks and tics.

Following the death of his wife Trudy in a car bomb attack in 1997, while picking up cold medicine for Monk's brother Ambrose, Monk suffered a nervous breakdown and became catatonic, refusing to leave his house for three years.

With the help of practical nurse Sharona Fleming, Monk was finally able to leave the house, and he began to perform consulting work for the police on particularly difficult cases.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Randall "Randy" Disher call on him when they have a case they can't crack.
