Is ekasi a wannabe desperte housewives in “ekasi” or a genuinely pop driven “kasi drama’ mmmmmh? That’s the question I had throughout the first episode of the series of dramas set in township, funded by etv. Now etv is not well known for splashing out when it comes to local content,so it’s a very unique experience to have such dramas on etv. Right of the bat, one could see the nollywood influences; ie low budget and dodgy production quality (blame etv for that) , sensational story line ( way older man, younger woman marriage intangle with garden boy romance ) and an attempt to tell a story that will appeal to the masses, which aint a bad thing.
It’s great that Vusi Twala is now creating a name for himself as a director cum writer and it seems he has put his presesenter days way behind him. Although the show started off quite to shakey start, litereally. With too many NYPD inspired camera movement that did not work ,he was quick to change pace and go for more classical steady shoot root.Which worked better. I just wish I could say the same thing about the entire episode.
It would be nice to rave about how good the 1st episode was but I think it was just barely watchable. It was cool to see a couple of new faces on screen, get new production companies to do commissioned work or even to have more local content on etv.Yet the story was too formulae, the production quality was not really up to scratch and some of the actors were totally dodgy. But I believe the series will do well because we just don’t have enough local stories on tv,even if the local stories are re-hashed stories we’ve seen on American shows and movies just painted with a local air brush,I believe the masses are starving and will gulp it up. Hopefully the second story will be more innovative, one can only hope.
