Ah the final episode played last night ( unless there's someone at the SABC with a cruel and unussual sense of punishment; this WAS the final episode) the chapter on series 2 of a A Place Called Home is done and it begs the question; was it a satisfactory end? One word described it for me ; anti-climatic. Anti - climatic in all senses of the implication of the word. The build up of the series was nice up to a point, but when it was supposed to reach its crescendo ,it started to fizzle out. Last night exit felt more like a wimper done a proper send off.
If you somehow missed the finale ( there was nothing grand about it) ,it was concerned with Mavesta's funeral and getting different insight into the man that was Mavesta through flashbacks of those left behind. As to how the different funeral guests saw the man, contradictory to the picture the pastor was painting. As ussual Cassius had the laugh out moment of them all, his funny flashback cum dream sequence of him and Mavesta role swapped was hilarious.Espicially with the twist at the end. Ronnie as Mavesta in the flash backs was a joy to watch but the issues that have been plagueing APCH for the past 6 weeks raised their ugly heads again.
What problems you ask dear reader, well let me note them for you. One , there is the issue of characters disappearing before their story arch is completed,In this case we have our wooden boy actor Hudson. Although it was nice to know in the flashback that the man has a wife dying of cancer and that poor Mavesta actually cared for the man. We had no word on his whereabouts during the ourse of last night episode. We don't even know how he has handled the fact that he has killed his own boss, we dont even know what was he up to for the entire episode, period and this is the final episode. But he was not the only character who had disappeared on us ,where was Lindiwe? ( more on Lindiwe to follow)
Problem number 2,laps of story logic. Now this is a goldmine of issues when it comes to APCH, er...Blues kicks out everyone from the house nhe, Sphiwe who somehow had made up with Lindiwe or had he.You can never know anything with APCH anymore, does not contact miss girlfriend but goes to Cassius dingy place, to find a place to stay.In no ways is there any referance to where or what happened to Lindiwe or their relationship. We just have to accept that he is here with Cassius and their back to square one. What is the status on him and Lindiwe ,we really don't know. Don't even get me started on the bollock story of Sphiwe not being able to get his money from the bank because he does not have a residential address.Since when do people get paid without them either consenting on how they will get paid? Then the idea of Mavesta's cousin, what happened to that? How did Precious pay for Mavesta's funeral, since when do boGuluva have funeral plans?Since Mavesta was the source of income what is Precious and kd surviving on? If Blues and Moferefere are taking over Mavesta's business what happened to Hudson and his take over? Questions and more questions and no answers
Anyhow if these guys are thinking that all these will be used to set up a 3rd season ,all I have to say to them is shame on you.For butchering such a good story and premise. Instead of letting the characters grow and develop. The series decided to stagnate them and the story, which is a shame. So the series is over and all i can say to that is goodbye and good riddance.Like a bad relationship, it started all nice and sweet but by the end of it. It's all bitter, irreconcilable differences that make us glad to part ways .
The one thing though ,that I will truely miss about the series is Mavesta ,Ronnie Nyakale needs to be on our screen more often. The man is a thespian of note, he made Mavesta into a philosophical king cum thug who was both repulsive and attractive at once. Both as a character, a person and carricature/icon of the South African gangster myth. I will miss the mans performance and presence and the way the character of Mavesta was one of the few well developed characters on the show. The rest of the show can continue to live on the streets of Hilbrow and off my screen I won't be bothered. Amagugugu alelizwe ayosala 'emathuneni in memory of Mavesta; the man and the charcater.sweet
