APCH : finaly bows out

Ah the final episode played last night ( unless there's someone at the SABC with a cruel and unussual sense of punishment; this WAS the final episode) the chapter on series 2 of a A Place Called Home is done and it begs the question; was it a satisfactory end? One word described it for me ; anti-climatic. Anti - climatic in all senses of the implication of the word. The build up of the series was nice up to a point, but when it was supposed to reach its crescendo ,it started to fizzle out. Last night exit felt more like a wimper done a proper send off.

If you somehow missed the finale ( there was nothing grand about it) ,it was concerned with Mavesta's funeral and getting different insight into the man that was Mavesta through flashbacks of those left behind. As to how the different funeral guests saw the man, contradictory to the picture the pastor was painting. As ussual Cassius had the laugh out moment of them all, his funny flashback cum dream sequence of him and Mavesta role swapped was hilarious.Espicially with the twist at the end. Ronnie as Mavesta in the flash backs was a joy to watch but the issues that have been plagueing APCH for the past 6 weeks raised their ugly heads again.

What problems you ask dear reader, well let me note them for you. One , there is the issue of characters disappearing before their story arch is completed,In this case we have our wooden boy actor Hudson. Although it was nice to know in the flashback that the man has a wife dying of cancer and that poor Mavesta actually cared for the man. We had no word on his whereabouts during the ourse of last night episode. We don't even know how he has handled the fact that he has killed his own boss, we dont even know what was he up to for the entire episode, period and this is the final episode. But he was not the only character who had disappeared on us ,where was Lindiwe? ( more on Lindiwe to follow)

Problem number 2,laps of story logic. Now this is a goldmine of issues when it comes to APCH, er...Blues kicks out everyone from the house nhe, Sphiwe who somehow had made up with Lindiwe or had he.You can never know anything with APCH anymore, does not contact miss girlfriend but goes to Cassius dingy place, to find a place to stay.In no ways is there any referance to where or what happened to Lindiwe or their relationship. We just have to accept that he is here with Cassius and their back to square one. What is the status on him and Lindiwe ,we really don't know. Don't even get me started on the bollock story of Sphiwe not being able to get his money from the bank because he does not have a residential address.Since when do people get paid without them either consenting on how they will get paid? Then the idea of Mavesta's cousin, what happened to that? How did Precious pay for Mavesta's funeral, since when do boGuluva have funeral plans?Since Mavesta was the source of income what is Precious and kd surviving on? If Blues and Moferefere are taking over Mavesta's business what happened to Hudson and his take over? Questions and more questions and no answers

Anyhow if these guys are thinking that all these will be used to set up a 3rd season ,all I have to say to them is shame on you.For butchering such a good story and premise. Instead of letting the characters grow and develop. The series decided to stagnate them and the story, which is a shame. So the series is over and all i can say to that is goodbye and good riddance.Like a bad relationship, it started all nice and sweet but by the end of it. It's all bitter, irreconcilable differences that make us glad to part ways .

The one thing though ,that I will truely miss about the series is Mavesta ,Ronnie Nyakale needs to be on our screen more often. The man is a thespian of note, he made Mavesta into a philosophical king cum thug who was both repulsive and attractive at once. Both as a character, a person and carricature/icon of the South African gangster myth. I will miss the mans performance and presence and the way the character of Mavesta was one of the few well developed characters on the show. The rest of the show can continue to live on the streets of Hilbrow and off my screen I won't be bothered. Amagugugu alelizwe ayosala 'emathuneni in memory of Mavesta; the man and the charcater.sweet

Guys...am convinced...Ronnie Nyakale is sooooooo underrated as an actor...the only sad bit is that he is being typecasted into these Guluva kind of roles...but then again...I can't picture Mavesta palying a pastor role.

I noticed last night how the only reason i watched was him. When they were showing those memory clips, it hit me that APCH is not home without him.

No Ronnie is the man, if the do a 3rd series they will need somethng magical to fill thebig gap the guy has left. Ngqesta have you seen " a portrait of young man drowning" . Ronnie plays the lead in it and he is great. It would be cool to see him play a different character, so as to show the scope of his talents.
The man was a big and powerful force in the show.
he really killed me when he was playing Cassius for a change,it was hilarious.

I can't picture Mavesta palying a pastor role.

oh hell no, he will never pull it off. he has the gangster look period.

I also had so many questions, I wanted to see what happenned to Hudson and the cousin, mcm. Why would moferefere feel sorry for the man that he wanted to kill, he should rejoice that he does not have to worry about him anymore.

I noticed how each person in that story is identified with clothes:

-Siphiwe with his maroon leather jacket
-Mavesta with his Dickies "suit"
-Cassius with his blue half-hat and that jacket

and when Cassius was dreaming of being Mavesto, I had a good laugh. Pity mavesto had to steal his joy.

Ja last night episode was so so......i must agree with you Thabang the ending was a shame........i loved APCH mara episode ya mabane spoilt it.....i also wonder how are they going to do a come back on this if ever there will be one. On the last part were my fav actor(Sphiwe) was sitting with "the Starringgg of the book" lol.......Sphiwe said the book ends with the gangster (being S) killed, now that makes me think....we might not get the third season as we anticipate.

overall the series was nice very enjoyable..........the part that cracked me last week was when Hudson was getting ready to shoot Syl and he went like " hai wena Hudson" with his actions only he knows how to do

guys i must say yestday's episode really touched me. In every human being there is some good in him, no matter how corrupt he may be. What i really liked abt Mavesta is he was a family man, whu'll do anything to support his family. I agree with Toxic we really shud c him more often, he is a great actor. Thumbs up!!!

i loved those two gansters -
have you ever heard of a gangsta who died very old?

Mavesta is a  great actor.

Zandile - them gangsta marry beautiful women and if you want to hurt them or cross their paths, hurt the family wena.

i loved APCH, what happened to Tshisa bathong, why with this old series, Mirror mirror? me i am hurt.

he really killed me when he was playing Cassius for a change,it was hilarious.....it almost felt odd I must say.

No tha-ba-ng I have not seen a portrait of young man drowning....is it a movie? There's a play he was a part of in the Grahamstown Arts Festival the other year....he was just as good. I read somewhere that when he 'gets' into a character he even puts gravel stones inside the shoes he has on while playing the role....so as to feel the pain and suffering that he is meant to potray.

I saw him on Jerusalema as well.....and I wondered if he would have pulled off the Lucky Kunene role....what do you guys think?

I also found what Blues said about a true Guluva never living long enough to see his old days to be quite profound and true ....they just never live that long.

guys, have you noticed that lot of talented actors yako Mzansi jus goes unnoticed, Checka nje U Linda Sokhulu she recently played a role of isangoma Ku Ubizo-The Calling, man oh man that gal should be going places bt i dont think there's any hope for yena. Somthn has got to be done abt this guys, what do u say?

tha - bang
26 Mar 2009 12:19

true no they never live that long, but we are fascinated by them.go figure.
portrait is a short film he starrred in during his papa - action days ,done by bomb shelter.its very moving.if you ever get to see it che-che-check it out.
although he plays almost a com-tsotsi type of character ,his performance is very subtle.
I too believe he was under utilised in Jerusalema,he could have pulled off the Lucky kunene character, but the producers probably had other ideas.sweet

Zandile123 unfortuneatly the industry is very very small and its hard for our actors to get consistent work.Hence to become well known and recognized as compared to faces we see on a daily basis on our idiot box.So some just seem to be slipping through the cracks. But as it gets bigger hopefully it will get better for all involved
