The saga that is A Place Called Home was back on our screen last night, ending rumours amonst the faithful that last weeks inspid episode was the final of the season. Last nights episode went a long way to clear some of the issues that were raised with the series so far (particularly, last weeks episode). But there were still some issues that still need to be ironed out ( such as story structure and character choices) but the episode had a lot of saving grace moments none the less.
As ussual with APCH any episode that centers on Mavesta always seems to be a winner, I don't know if its due to the character or the performance by Ronnie Nyakale (which is briliant). But you know when Mavesta is the centre of the story ,theres bound to be contradiction, tension and pure drama. Last night delivered on these. It at least also answered one of the neckling issues from last week of ;What happened to Mavesta and Precious after the great escape fiasco. So we find the family at breaking point and Mavesta ,after some long philosophical rant about the nature of man, existence and crime, decides he is quitting the game, while his ahead. Unfortuneatly for him , poor Hudson is tired of playing second fiddle and wants to take over the business and is not willing to take instructions from Mavesta cousin, when he can run the show himself.
This was for me a very interesting story in the whole episode. Even the flashback of Hudson ,pre the Moses beard days, of how the two (Hudson and Mavesta) relationship started was handled quite nicely and it added some weight to the final scene of the show.It added a nice sense of irony and tragedy ,cause at some level although we get a sense that their relationship started off as a lesson in power dynamics. The strong preying on the weak, I believe poor Mavesta actually started caring for Hudson and was trying to save him from a fate as similar as his,but Hudson's greed and ambition (probably even resentment) got the best of him.Or I just got way impressed Ronnie performance and I'm imbuing his motives with too much meaning.
Just like 2Pac, Mavesta has survived from too many gun shot wounds and his luck was bound to run out. A bullet in a head courtesy of his right hand man Hudson has totally sealed it for me. Mavesta, the criminal who could have been a better man, who realises it too late ,ends up dead on the city roof courtesy, yet again to one of his henchman. The world of crime and violence is very unforgiving, cruel and tragic. Idon'tsee him surving from that bullet wound, he maybe the great Guluva of APCH but he is no Wolverine.
Whilst the story of Hudson and Mavesta "Carlito way" story was handled well, everything else around it was rushed and totally uneven. Sphiwe and Lindiwe reunion was not given the time it needed.Crucial beats like seeing the two finaly come face to face after such a long time, was skipped over,we were just thrown right into their lovey davey conversation. At one point I thought it was one of their dream sequences. Then theres Cassius and Sphiwe again, Sphiwe spent weeks looking for the guy. To no avail. The man shows up and wrecks his party.Next thing ,the two are scheming on how to save Mavesta. We are not given an idea of were their relationship is at. Ater all thats happened between them. Theres no tieing up of the threads of the conflicted relationship they've had or at least an idea that "hey Ive been looking for you and i'm glad or not glad that I found you".
What we have is these guys running off to try to stop Hudson .How we they going to do that? Maybe use their fingers as guns?Talk sense into Mavesta? I don't know .So we have a nice set up for next week, Mavesta is dead,Hudson is the new king. Mavesta's cousin may still show up,then theres still Moferefere, so theres potential for more drama but with APCH you never know,so we will see next week,
P.S I really love how when the characters on APCH clean up,they clean up very well.look at Lindiwe to Shorty. So not all the charcters are dirty now, there are those who are clean too lol, sweet
