Fringe goes very very X-files on us,it was only short of the shows theme music and Moulder and Sculley to pop up .But none the less it was great viewing, if you don't mind having a McGuffin device running the plot. We also get a new character , the Observer , I doubt if our own Observer is pale, with no eyebrows and eats burgers with a megapile of ground pepper and is telepatic.Mmmm you never know.
Last nights episode started with poor Peter all fed up with Bishop snr's antics and ready and willing to bounce off. Until Mr.Observer and a funny shaped metal cone, which he refers to as a "beacon'' and thats all we got, showed up and changed the gameplan once more. As to what the "beacon"is, what does it do, who send it, what does it do and who the hell is the observer ; a man? machine? Alien (no not the ones that jump across borders but the UFO types) We did not get any answers on that front . The beacon worked as a McGuffin; a plot device that is shreded in secrecy (it's ussually not expalined ) but it's the catalyst for the story moving forward. Think of the briefcase in Ronin, the briefcase in Pulp fiction, the virus in M:I2 , not once are we told or shown whats in the briefcases but the story is centred around them.
So it was with the "beacon', hopefully the day will come whereby Fringe starts giving us some answers and not just keep possing questions. By the end of the episode we were given a shock revelation,so that we should not cmplain about the 'beacon" not being explained. Olivia's dead FBI agent boyfriend was shown to be up and about instead of being skin and bones. In casket in the ground.I expect we will get some answers next week, I hope we do.
Aside from the shock revelation, the Observer, I was also intrigued by the convertion of Bishop jnr. Peter has always been the skeptic in the show but after playing 'mind games' with the Observer, the mans faith has been shaken a bit. In true Sculley fashion he has discovered theres more to the world than meets the eye and what science suggests, anyways within the Fringe universe anyhows.
Now what does it mean for us poor old viewers is ,I hope, next week some interesting intrigue and at least a hint to how some of the puzzles are put together. For example how close is the link between Peter and Walter, is the Observer part of Massive Dynamic or is there a 3rd force responsible for all these attacks and how did the dead man pull a lazarus on us? And why is he back from the grave? Unfortuneatly we will have to wait till next week.Till then its the long wait, and I thought Lost was bad
