When are we getting there Africa?

Yesterday I was on the BBA blog and a lady raised an issue about Africa being a cosmopolitan state. Not cosmopolitan in the sense that we all read Cosmo but in a sense that Africa is made up of mix of different cultures, ethnicities and hues. That we cannot portray contemporary Africa as exclusively black, but it has shades of white ,pink, green, purple and blue. That in many countries that arediffeerent ethnicities and races co - existing but that is hardly portrayed in the media, why?

But I've come to realise that in our media, both print, music and tv that the cosmopolitan element of Africa is down played a lot. Look at BBA theres only black guys on the show and no Arabic, Indian or even Caucasians represent the other countries not that these people do not exist but we would like to pretend that they don't. Dotty ,I think was the ladies name, raised the issue of how in the show only the Ibo guys havebeen contiously selected to represent nigeria. You'd ask yourself in a melting pot such as Africa why are the same regions and ethnic groups being picked over and over again?

It's not just limited to tv, we see it in print and in music where certain artist are over looked because they do not subscribe to the stereotype idea of what "african music" should be . I was very impressed with the MAMA , Mtvbase's first Music video awards that they have recognised rock groups and alternative music genres in their line up.But why is this not a norm?If noticed how even at the SAMA the rock category is almost treated with such disdain from the general public, because it predominetly white. But if we say we are cosmopolitan society ,isn't differnce and plurality something to be encouraged than to spat on and demeaned?

Why should it be an issue if South Africa was to be represented by an Indian guy or an Afrikaaner on BBA? Why do we perpuate myths of essentialism espicially when it comes to whose African and what looks African.Just questions , anyone with answers or their own questions feel free to drop them?

My take on this is that the BBA contestants represent the demographics of the continent...there's far more of us than them...

I was very impressed with the MAMA....
Are they really called that? LOL!

My take on this is that the BBA contestants represent the demographics of the continent...there's far more of us than them... but does demographics mean total exclusion?

And if this were to b the other way round I'm scared to even think what or how many accusations would the SAMA organisers and sponsors get.

I could not agree more. We, and with we I am actually referring to the majority of Africans, still need to learn to look beyond skin color, features, etc, and accept, respect and embrace each other as equal human beings.

I suppose we just never gon get there...Africa is a black lady, and that is just that... This thing goes deeper than just skin colour.... Show me a black man, first, that represents England...

carino do we want to be like the likes of england or do we want to be better?
my argument is if we want to be a rainbow nation and we are living in a cosmo society and continent why are we diggin our heads in the sand and not embrace that?

Interesting Tha Bang. My Editor was making a similar point just yesterday. She also thought it might be interesting to have a couple of people in with different religions.

My statements are going to be bold so brace yourselves...

We do not have purple people - Only Barney the dino is purple... SO If Black and White people, oh! and mediterranean people (Colored and Indian)  would be in agreement that race doesn't matter - firstly we are human beings and we deal with similar crap each day regardless of what race you are we could go a long way. Africa, to me,still fels entitled and abused. Africans, regardless of race, still blame colonialism for all the ish they experience. Isn't it time we accepted that colianialism happened and we need to deal with it... FOR heaven's sake, it is gone and now we are here... What about now? what about the future? where do we want to see Africa? How do we see progress in africa?

For me, I feel disdain when people make a big deal about the other race; blacks will complain about White and vis versa. South africa had apartheid and Gaad everything was blamed on it, now it's gone and people are becoming tribalists... During apartheid everyone was everyone's partner in fighting it, there were elements of tribalism but there was a bigger evil to fight... NOU, tribalism is in full swing, then it festers into xenophobia.

Like I said, we are human beings first then maybe we are just africans regardless of what race you are!

Sego its about being inclusive and acknowledging our multicultarilism and mutli - ethnic make up.being inclusive does not negate the others humanity.but ifwe want to perpetuate stereotypes and not open ourselves up, how will we grow as a people.

espicially when it comes to whose African and what looks African?

Black people are a majority in Africa as a whole and we are also divided according to racial lines.  I guess in any race a person feels more comfortable with a group that have the same cultural and traditional beliefs.

I guess in any race a person feels more comfortable with a group that have the same cultural and traditional beliefs. I guess that is true but does it mean we should purposely exclude those who are different from us to an extent that we behaviour as if they do not exist?

tha-bang, i think the choice of BBA HMs in terms of colour/race, becomes a practical issue. If there has to be 12 HMs then already your scope (i.t.o. numbers)  is limited. Then, you have to contend with the issue of demographics within each country, for example, in SA chances are you'll come across 100 black Africans before 2 whites, 0.2 indian, 1 coloured etc. So, if you choose the indian, the black group might feel that is not a fair representation of the country. I imagine a similar rule applies in other African countries.
