Since the end of "senesa pula" , there has not been anything that has caught my eye drama wise on 1,till now. "A place called home" plays on Wednesday nights 20h30 on 1.It tells the fimilar story of people coming to Jozi to follow their dreams but find themselves homeless and disenfranchised. The charm of the series is the fact that it gives the viewer insight into the lives of people on the street and those who are struggling to get out of the poverty net of the inner city. A nice touch is the use of dream sequences ala Tsha Tsha style, whereby the characters hopes, fears and inner thoughts are vsualised through dream sequences, fantasy sequences and metaphors. Most of these sequences are cleverly created to evoke humour or drama. Then theres the quick music video editing style in the show, that gives the show a young - teen feel to it.
The current season seems to be dealing with a similar theme that Jerusalema tackled of hijacked buildings and the underworld exploiting the need for accomodation in jozi.Theres also the subplots of the different characters stories trying to scratch out a way of life for themselves, from the band of homeless ladies, to Siphiwe who is an aspiring writer but lives on the street, to Bra les who is the negative of Siphiwe a failed writer who lives through the bottle , to Mr.Papa Action again as gangster boss Sylvester ; a gangster with family values but still a menace to society to Mhloti a single mother trying to do good with the little she has.
Unfortuneatly last nights episode was one of those filler episode, where nothing monumental happens and there story is not really moving forward.Cause the guys are still re-establishing some of the tensions and introducing more "bad guys" to the series. But the flashy editing an fresh shooting does keep ones attention. The series has some interesting conceits and i'll do a proper episode analysis next week. But at least I have ound something to fill the void of DOAQ
