I want to Sing Gospel: Episode 6 Recap

I wrote this article on Wednesday evening after the live recording. But after Saturday (contestants will know why) I wanted to edit it, but I decided it was going to be wrong of me to change my original thoughts and I decided to publish the original article.

I’m sure all of you have always heard celebrities saying - I was accompanying my friend for some audition when the director/producer asked me to audition, and I instead of my friend got the job on the spot.

When I heard one of the judges was running late - I was praying deep down that she was not going to make it so that the Producers could ask me to stand in for her. Damn I was so disappointed when she walked in as if she was the Queen from one of Gibson Kente’s theatre shows. Maybe my dream of being a TV star will happen the day Robert Mugabe steps down as Zim President.
611
Anyway, judges for this week were Vicky (Shame sisi I hope it’s not true that you lost your voice) I didn’t want to ask her about the allegations of her losing her voice. She looked good for someone without a voice. Another judge was Deborah Fraser (seeing that she’s going through a family crisis) I won’t say much about her, except to tell her that, whoever lied, calling her a DIVA was HIGH on something – she’s a DIVA wanna-be. And the 3rd judge was Tata Tsholo Leokaoke, from Lesedi FM (I hope I was correct this time, if not – leave me alone, I’m stressed – it’s my first day at work since June 2007).

Four contestants’ names were called (Lungisani, Kgotso, Berlinda and Shannon).

617

I told you that there were surprises coming-up, first was to find out that Lungisani had the most number of votes (clearly KZN people have airtime, otherwise how would you explain it?), next shock was to learn that Kgotso, Berlinda and Shannon received the least number of votes. Judging by their last week’s performance, I wasn’t expecting this outcome.

Tshepiso and Lungisani were there people I thought would receive the least number of votes. Why? Because I thought Tshepiso couldn’t sing, and Lungisani’s ZCC moves were a distraction. Boy was I wrong!!!!!!

Performances
Theme – Top 10 singing songs from Top Female Gospel artists (I thought women’s day was in August).

Kgotso (Mr Thabo Mr Thabo)
8/10
because he sang one of my fav sis Ribs’s song – maar the boy is an actor. What was up with the ring and the moves? Were you trying to do a Vuyo Mokoena or Jabu Hlongwana? I honestly think you are using a fake voice. Please use your natural voice – maybe you won’t be in the bottom 3 again. In fact do whatever you want to do – you going home soon. I miss you my friend, please give me a call.

Shannon

604

10/10 – I wish I had friends and contacts in the right places to organize you a recording deal NOW. Damn, you came to the party sisi. Your performance was AWESOME. Vicky was lost for words hence she first mumbled some ridiculous comment, Vicky – please get a life.

Berlinda
605
10/10. I don‘t care what they say about you being shy or nervous. You sang your heart out. Great performance sisi. Do they want a Rebecca from you? Don’t they know its hard being a Capetonian in Jozi? Don’t they know capetonians like us are not used seeing so many black people in suburbs? They must just leave us alone. Kanane what’s the name of the Rehab centre visited by Chilli M (I think I need to be admitted).

Lusanda
8/10. Great idea gone bad. I like the fact that you came out of your comfort zone by trying a new style. It’s a bold move, but it was not as good as your last performance. Please put some sense into Ntokozo – VERSATILITY……….. C-mon people, if you think you are a singer then be brave enough to try something new like Lusanda. Good attempt bhuti.

Damn I’m giving good scores today – let’s see if it will last.

Tshepiso
Ag for once I’m going to be nice because I clearly know nothing about music – 6/10. Trust me this is a very good score.

Ntokozo
3/10 – she actually deserves 9/10 but I had to deduct 5 points because she’s so predictable. And 1 because of that hideous thing on her head. Clearly she didn’t take note when I was talking to Pertunia. I’m going to repeat myself (Get rid of that mop in your head ASAP) otherwise NO one will take you serious. Great outfit by the way.

Lungisani

618
5/10
– I don’t know what the people voting for you were smoking, but I want it. Clearly they misunderstood the voting process. The hotline is not a JZ Fan club PEOPLE. It’s for the next Gospel STAR. Love your jacket bhuti. When are we (I, Kgotso, Tshepiso and Lungisani) going out for Drinks? I don’t mean water, I’m talking about over 18’s drinks. Damn I haven’t had alcohol since 2002. By the way, your performance was pathetic.

Talking about Drinks? Do Gospel stars drink alcohol (and no Rebecca is not a Gospel star)?????

Mzoxolo
592
8/10. There was just something wrong in your performance bhuti. I think you can do way better than that. I guess it was not your day, because you have been consistent from day 1. Watch the tape again and you’ll see what I’m talking about. If you win, I can hook you up with my younger sister. Just for you her lobola will come down from R200 000 to R100 000.

Charisma
9/10 – There’s really nothing to say about Charisma because she never disappoints.

Thabisa
9/10.
Don’t you think Thabisa, Ntokozo and Zim could make a killer group? Great performance sisi.

Elimination
As much as it was sad, it had to happen, 2 were eliminated.
624625626
Obviously if you have 3 contestants and only one of them is safe, you can’t address them individually. Thabo should have talked to all of them before announcing Shannon’s name. It was obvious that she was not safe after Thabo addressed her individually. Both did not deserve to be eliminated.

Lindelani – please bhuti next time get judges that will add substance to the panel. Everyone you’ve had as a judge so far hasn’t made any meaningful contribution to the show and contestants (except the Vocal coach)

I’m not voting for anyone this week because I’m going to REHAB for 2 weeks. Where’s JESUS AT when you NEED him?

Happy Monday.

OK I didn't watch, can someone tell me what song did Miss Mbambo sing? Ok OK ya'll know what I really wanna know, neway is she still singing Winnie style, or did she do something different this week?

The hotline is not a JZ Fan club PEOPLE. It’s for the next Gospel STAR.
LMAO

As for Lungisani getting the most votes, mina I'm not suprised, the guy is hilarous and good to watch coz u get a good laugh, he's an entertainer, I just hope that he doesn't get to win on that mark only.

"Yes he can sing but again I think they doing him a favour since kunentwana ok'ngathi ayilunganga ngaye, you know ppl mos"
hahhaha Floh, I know what u mean, I think abantu want him to win just for the mere fact that kunokungacacile ngaye, just to prove that anyone can make it!

BTW, am I the only one who believes that Eskom was lying when they daid that we are done with load shedding? Coz it still affects us 3 times a week in my neighbourhood.

Awesome recap Mjj, u never dissapoint yazi!

Whats up with Lindelani and Siphumemele i think  there is something going on there, i was so disappointed when Shanny was eliminanted surely she sang very well, i hope i meet her back home and we can form our own group LOL
At least we still have Charisma representing our city for now of course cos with Sphu around she clearly stands no chance. but NO i withdraw that statement capetonians better vote hard for our gal hah...

It was so distressing to see the audience on its feet dancing and singing along when Ntokozo was on stage.....hayi!

so glad Kgotso wasn't eliminated. Last night's performances were so bleh......wasn't impressed by ANYONE.

Very dissappointed that Berlinda did not make it. Who's next? Charisma! I won't be surprised anyway, it seem people vote ngobukhaya.

Lungisani's performance was pathetic indeed. If I had to eliminate someone next, it will certainly be him.

The judges were clearly clueless.

Great one mjj once again.
The show was 'I want to sing Hlengiwe Mhlaba!'
To Thabo: Next time, please allow more than one judge(ALL, if possible) to comment on a contestant( I saw Vicky shaking her head once, and i was soo looking forward to her comment, but NO you didn't give her a chance).
And please, for the album, can we have original music? Enough of Hlengiwe Mhlaba already!
As for the elimination, I'm still shocked. What is Tshepiso still doing there again?
And what's with Deborah & local music? Even if umuntu ebheda, as long as ecula ilocal it's fine kusisi. uPastor made you patriotic sisi?

@ firstdvd nami i also think sphume wil b the star, bcos at the end of the day lindelani is just making money like the rest of us ,we know many ppl buy the sphumelele type of music ,He surely wants sum1 who wil sell lots of albums, charismas type wont make it big as far as sales are concerned.to me charism is the star!

that show must end i think the excitement is gone now we just want to see Sphumelele being the next gospel star ( BTW why did she change her name?) i just dont understand the connection between Sphumelele and Lindelani, she doesnt even give me goose bumps? hayi suka maan!

Shannon has great stage presence plus the voice shem, she can sing bathong!!! I dont know if Lindelani is deaf, blind and stupid? Nxa!!!

there was a person singing a song by Whitney Houston??? was that suppose to be Gospel? but i'll give it to the person for thinking out of the box " i wanna run to you, oh je-hee-hee-sus!......." WTF

( BTW why did she change her name?)
@ Cody, coz there is already a highly talented Ntokozo Mbambo of Joyous Clebration, so Sphumelele said she doesn't want to cause confusion when she is also famous!

Kodwa that Ntokozo?Sphumelele talks more than she sings........she don't follow no melody but just makes a lot of noise in the beginning of the song, she has a strong voice yes, but too much shouting........ingathi uphethwe ngumoya, and sounds more like abasisi bacula kwi taxi rank zase Nyanga wearing ibarret......lol

Toxic
08 Sep 2008 02:28

Yes Luksta, anything to get them out of their comfort zones. It's one thing for someone to record a demo and get signed by a record company. Quite another for a competition where u have to please a whole range of people so it makes sense that these people must be VERSATILE (a IWTSG word).....

njingalwazi
08 Sep 2008 02:44

I must say ukuthi the competition was quite tough last night but some people just end up messing other musicians' songs. Actually, i just have few things to mention about this whole competition. It is vivid that Lusanda is going to be kicked out of the competition next week, not only because he cannot sing but because he looks GAY and portrays himself as one. Thabisa- That assemblies kind of voice can do wonders for you only at church or at the taxi rank in Site C. Siphumele aka Ntokozo might be in the finals because Lindelani is so impressed with her ( I don't know why because i could not pick any uniqueness in her except loudness and over exaggeration. Mzoxolo- i like the dude and i think he has got a very brighter future, he is honest and humble and a very beautiful angelic voice. Kgotso- I've got nothing to say about him except that he is a FAKE. Charisma, Wow! She has a beautiful voice this one and there's just no two ways about it but let's please look at this from the business side of this. Yes, the main purpose is to look for talent but the MAIN one is to make money. They have to get someone who is going to sell when the deal has been finalized and as for u Charisma, that cd will only be bought in Mitchell's plain and there won't be any profit for Lingelani and Thokozani Nkosi. But if they take Siphumele or Thabisa, they know it for a fact that they will sell countrywide and that will pay them back the money spent on I want to sing Gospel. Also, i'm confident that 1 or 2 of the finalists will get a better deal somewhere else and they will do so much better. Between Charisma, Lusanda and Mzoxolo. I'm still very heartsore that they kicked my princess out, ndiyamthanda uShannon.

08 Sep 2008 02:47

I guess I'm the only one who thought Shannon's performance was not up to scratch.

I guess Tshepiso next week will be singing RKelly's "sex me" and change it to "save me" or something. I just hope he doesn't trigger Kgotso's demons. I mean "I wanna run to you", thee song yokuromensa (to romance).

uTshepiso thinks this is Popstars, last week he chose "Im your angel" and yesterday it was a Whitney song...I think he just wants to get in the music biz.
Khotso is so pulling a Mthunzi Namba and those moves :-(
Charisma is a darling but I don't think she will win, she's got a great voice but there is nothing unique in her style.
I don't quite get uMzoxolo no Lusanda. Im also loving Thabisa after yesterday, she is trying to be a more subtle Spumelele LOL

Clearly its Sister Sphesh or umzalwane uLungsta thats gon win this competion... Thats because abahlali can relate o their music.. and thats why they vote for them and give them standing ovations when they sing as well as dance along to their perforamces...

Charisma has got real technique.. she sings well... and she derseves to "be the next gospel sensation" but the market for her music is not the same people that listen to Hlengiwe Mhlaba... and uSis Debzzz.. made sure she stresses the point about local being lekker...

As for uLusanda yena, shem.. he'd never survive a full album... his voice scratches half way through every song...

@ relay-Charisma representing our city for now of course cos with Sphu around she clearly stands no chance. lol lmao
@ Toxic-It was so distressing to see the audience on its feet dancing and singing along when Ntokozo was on stage.....hayi!
People get a lyf, de gal can sing and entertain at the same time, and dats whats everyone is looking for in a gospel star. Take a look at Bukiwe Twani and Nobethembu from Joyous Celebration they do exactly like Ntokozo and she is so ordinary and original.
Yes, there are people who can sing well in de competition, but if Ntokozo could release an album surely it would sell like hot cakes judging by the way viewers are taken by the way she performs. She is also de talk of that town, and even u guys are debating about her meaning dat she has managed to get people talking.
