Last night so the finale of Noah's Ark, that persky and yet adorable Grace did not bite the bullet. Uhuru's not convincing story came to an end,if you read between the lines by episode two you could see that so called "twist" coming. Linda and Moses end up happy ever after ,goody good gumdrops, not.
The series held a lot of promise and I watched it hoping it would get better. That it would stand on its own two feet and better its premise but honestly for me that never happened. Instead we had a Noah in a coma for the entire series, some pap acting from sis Nakedi Ribane but also some sublime touches in the story and cast.
What worked was the whoe middle class -new south africa experience angle. A life of the new black middle class in surburbia and the portrayal of the characters ambitions and weaknesses. Espicially on Grace and Moses part. Their stories were nice to follow. As were the performances. They were nice espicially those of Grace and Moses for me . Whilst in the finale Moshidi did try to bring some of her A game to the party her part. Uhuru's plot and character for me was just too whimsical. There was no carthasis or sense of growth in watchingher story develop for me as a viewer.
At least young Grace's story, characters changes and growth was a two way street that I could see and empathise with. It's a pity the series actually ended feeling like a set up for yet another run cause the issue of Noah has not been addressed. Questions around Grace and boyfriend where just left like "she says no drugs" and thats it.
I thought the ending was just to flowery too, very chick flick ending and did not really follow the arguements and tensions of the episode. I guess the writers saw it fit for Moses to learn his learn through reading a letter and then the ice queen that is Linda will grow all soft and gooey in two seconds and all will be forgiven. While a few scenes before she did not want anything to do with him .I guess, depending on the sort of person you are , you will either buy into that or just want to puke.I felt more like the latter.
As always the series proved what a versatile performer Issac Shai is. He mostly carried the show but if there is to be a second series.I wonder what they are going to do about Noah's character, will they recast? It wouldbe nce to see interaction between Noah, Moses and the family.
Hopefully some work will be done with transitions from scene to scene in the next series. Cause some of it was so arbitery, it kept drawing attention to itself. For example Moses is in hospital then cut to next scene he is at a resturant with the girls. There was hardly ever motivated movement from one scene to the other within the story.
Anyhow, will I watch season 2 if it comes out? It will need to be a hell more dramatic than the kumbaya that was season 1.I wish wernec and co all the best and lets get bolder on the next season guys.Stop holding back the punches. The look and feel is there, the subtleties are there but wheres the drama and the knock out punches?
