Noah's Ark - episode 3

Noah’s ark is really sending out mixed signals to me right now. Kinda like those girls in high school who you can’t understand if they love you or hate, because they keep blowing hot and cold depending on the day. So the third episode of Noah’s Ark was a mixed bag of nuts that was extremely good in some parts and arduously bad in some parts. That left me asking myself do I really want to continue watching this show? Some elements in the stories are working very well whilst some are just a hindrance, which just leave me cold.

Anyhow lets get into it, last nights’ episode finally sees Moses open up his club, the family getting to know they have a brother and Linda’s little secret coming out. What worked for me was Moses story line as usual. As we saw him hit rock bottom, being chased away from home and hitting a good high as some of he’s dreams were coming into fruition. It was nice to see a more jubilant Moses at the club and when the club finaly opened until it went up, literally ,in smoke. Bringing him back to rock bottom once again. His poor decisions at least left me with a need to watch again next week just to see how the cookie crumbles when he finds about the wifes sickness. Will he continue with the affair or will he stick with his wife? Will he tell the wife about the affair? What will happen when that darn Noah finally wakes up? I’m intrigue in this front.

The young Grace’s story was somewhat interesting too, and her interaction with the young Sipho is always lovely to watch. The addition of Chipa was a good touch cause it added a bit of friction in her relation to Sipho and a bit of drama at the end. I’m glad the guys did not go the date – rape route though, cause it’s so over done. But it will be interesting to see what will happen to poor Grace who was left on the street for dead and how will this impact on everyone else. Plus will Chippa get arrested? Another reason to watch the finale.Plus it was nice seeing the Jozi poetry underground being given some airtime on SABC.

But on the cold side was Moshidi’s Uhuru story, its just does not kick it for me and I can see it seems the story is going for the 6th Sense angle with the fiancé. But no matter how good an actor Moshidi is, Uhuru is just dull. Her internal turmoil is as exciting as watching paint dry.

Then there’s a gigantic misstep in my humble view of the directors and writers letting the kids know about them having a brother off camera. How could they do that? That’s a pivotal part of the story. We should have been there to see and hear the reactions for ourselves, not for it to be thrown away like that. I though that was really a bad move. Plus there was no direct result or action from such a major revelation in the story. It’s like people discovering Clark Kent is Superman and no one really makes an issue out of it.

Then there’s Linda’s story, from day one I have had issues relating to her character. She’s not the most sympathetic of character even if she suffers from cancer. But at least she is consistent in her spitefulness which we saw in her detective work and slamming the door on poor Moses in his darkest hour. Which won’t endear her to many people but at least propels the story forward and raises the stakes.

The pacing of yesterdays episode was a bit too much on the slow side and its starting to feel as if the guys are in no hurry to reach to the sucker punch of the series. The are too many dead air scenes especially in the dialogue department, ie in Uhuru and Lindas case. Who are not the most likeable or sympathetic characters to begin with.I understand we don’t need to like some characters but at least if we understood them or they came across as interesting ,that would be nice. Instead the two are both dull and boring and their scenes drag.

So next week is the final episode, I’ll be definitely watching. I just hope it does not live me with mixed feelings like last nights episode. It’s terrible when a show starts loosing the promise of its first episode,or does not deliver on the drama and intrigue it had promised. Lets hope episode four redeems the show.sweet

Ja, last night's episode was a bit disappointing...
I agree about that we should have seen the reactions of the daughters to the existance of Noah.

Was flipping between survivour, genrubbish, and Noah's ark last night, but mainly during survivor breaks, so I missed most of the other two shows.
I did see a bit of the interaction between Grace and Chipa, when they were kissing and she said she wasn't ready. My impression then was that Chipa would let it go, but the next time I came back, he was dropping the girl leaving her for dead, can you please tell me what happened Tha-bang, pretty please.

Also, i saw Moses called his wife to "talk" after the trouble( Which i gather from this article, was the club going up in literal smoke), but she told him to wait till morning. He then went to the white woman, needing a drink, did anything else happen after that.

ANyway, thanks for the recap. I agree, the directors and writers were off in making the Noah thing come out off camera...I mean really, that's just wrong.

i absolutely hated this third ep. thought last week was a bit wishy-washy, but last night was just bad! and they had plenty opportunity to up the game. the show has great talent in moshidi and yet they limit her. i agree not showing us the parents telling the girls about noah and moses moving out was a bit off, and they didn't show us linda telling her family she has cancer - i mean cheating us off two big reveals - that's unforgiven! they could have totally skipped the club scenes - those were dreadful! and how the hell can someone like uhuru let that chick lay it to her like that, she should have taken her to task, isn't she some pa? and she was defending shoddy work nogal! one typo, i'll fire your ass! come on! if she's so angry then she should be letting out more steam than she is, and the only inkling of that we saw was when she confronted grace last week about her "recreational drug habit". am very dissapointed.

@renegade chippa had tried to drug grace and it backfired, she started complaining of cramps and fainted.so he panicked and left her fo dead.
whilst Moses went to the arms of the white woman and kiss his sorrows goodbyes with her.
TeeBo yesterdays ep was a letdown you are right

It seems that most only watched some parts of the story and others “endured” the whole episode. The crux is that the episode was created to show turmoil with the ups and downs that the characters were experiencing in this episode. We agree on the scene were the daughters were told about Noah, but due to constraints it was omitted. At the end of the day this is a journey and a story of characters that will find resonance with some people and others will not take to the sub text which is portrait. That’s what makes us unique at the end of the day. Each of us have our own opinion and views. As for the AR rating, we have only received the feedback on EP1 thus far, which was 19.5

uhm... i hope i don't come across as nasty or anything, but according to my updates the ar's for ep 1 were more like 4.9 for all adults, NOT 19.5 - that's generations territory! and last week dropped to 4.6 - so, am not sure where wernerc got 19.5?

have to say, i think Noah's Ark is a sophisticated, elegant drama and it is refreshing to finally see something on our local screens about black South Africans who are not gangstas or clowns or wannabe Americans. this is a real black South African family and i know many families (black or not, middle class or not) who can relate to the drama. i think we need more and more of this on our screens. let's stop wanting to be Americans. let's stop putting ourselves down as black people. let's start telling stories that show the many complexities and shades of being South Africans. and please, let's stop accepting mediocrity and pandering and condescension when it comes to the representation of black people in the dramatic arts. we are not just there to be wide-eyed, dumb punching bags for Leon Schuster films or one dimensional, culturally soulless soapie characters like in Generations. i have thoroughly enjoyed viewing the well rounded, intelligent, complex characters of Noah's Ark and am totally looking forward to seeing how the mini series ends. big up to the writers, producers and brilliant cast.
