i think the whole BEE thing with the chinease is more about them being previously disenfranchised by the apartheid state because of their race.
Now that wrong is being written right by including them in the empowerment programme.Just like the indians and so called coloureds .it has nothing with chinease people being black.thats my say

I dont see the reason to put chinese under BEE, seriously, yazi a friend of a friend is chinese, he is a great guy and he says all his chinese friends hate black people, they call us "Black Ghosts", for that reason i dont see why they should be put under the same category as "Black Ghosts"

I also think that SA is very angry with the white community, as result we are trying everything to exclude them from this freedom of ours, hence we blame them for the apartheid and bitter at them for being previously advantaged and privileged, my opinion is including chinese in BEE is sick, to say the least

Theoretically i understand why they had a case to be classified as pdi's as they were also discriminated by the former government hence this law applies to the Chinese who were in the country pre 1994,  but it still doesn't feel right, maybe because change in uncomfortable....
I think i heard this on the radio or maybe while watching the news, but some guy made a good point and said, they were not part of the liberation struggle, you could see the indian, black and coloured people, but where were the chinese ??

so should we exclude people because they were not part of the liberation struggle how fair is that?
Which also brings to mind white people who are currently disadvanteged cant they also claim the need to be empowered?Arent they also part of the new South Africa or is empowerement about race and not empowering the disenfranchised ones?

the very people who are supposed to be empowered are still not. The majority of the wealth in this coutry is still in the hands of the former oppressors, while the majorith of pdi's are still living below the poverty line. Maybe BEE is nt working and other avenues need to be investigated, but the formerly disadantaged are only now advantaged on paper, practically are they really ? The gap between white and black is still evident, still very large...

That's the basis for the court ruling, not necessarily meaning they are now classified as blacks. White women are also pdi's and that has never made them black women

lol,
ur right blakrose they way affirmative action and BEE is carried out in the country it needs a second look so that it can work for those who are truely impvorished and disadvantages. For me its no longer an issue of race but that of nation building an uplifiting the standards of all south africans.poverty is not just a race issue its more than that

blakrose
03 Jul 2008 05:51

I am not in any way stating that the chinese are black i understand that they are now classified under coloured under the pdi bill, all i am disputing is the possible merit of this law

tha - bang
03 Jul 2008 05:54

so blakrose are you saying theyshould not benefit from BEE

blakrose
03 Jul 2008 05:57

I partly agree with you tha - bang but uplifting the standards of this country needs to start on the ground level, laws about who get preferential jods and tenders means nothing to impoverished communitie with no basic amenities or who reach high school not knowing how to read, that is a problem facing communities in this country, and those communities are black.

At least some people out there came to their senses.  The labck business and proffessional organisations have rejected this ruling and have called the gvt to to appeal this decision, we just have to wait and see what the legislators will say.  Are there any chinese in squatter camps?????  Mzansi things are happening.

Isnt it ironic, that people from rural areas especially black and coloureds are suffering, they were previously and currently disadvantaged. they havent tasted the rotten fruits of the struggle, and now nangoku uhulumeni esenekezi uBEE kumachina, what happened to charity begins at home. I watch a lot of apartheid documentaries, i never seen a "STRICTLY NO CHINESE ALLOWED"  sign and even the pictures taken during the struggle I dont see no Jackie Chan look alike being tortured.

nah i hear you, but that means our government departments need to do better than what their are doing right now. Although they are trying but more can still be done to improve such issues such as service delivery, education and infrastructure, thats why we have a government and we pay for it evey month and everyday we've our taxes.
as for affirmative action, i still believe it needs to be relooked on how it can work better for the poor.its not just about tenders look at the inzalo shares how many poor south african can afford topay 3600 for shares.
thats like an entire salary for some people but when these broad based bee deals are done it seems people arent thinking in that manner

andio1 the chinease were the great white elephant in the room.whom everyone behaved as if they were not there when they were.but ur right they were not active in the struggle as a people.
but was the struggle waged so that onl a few and deserving can benefit from a democratic state,or was the struggle to free all south africans even those who were not aware of the chains that bind them?

andi01
03 Jul 2008 06:22

@ Tha -bang

please define for me the word "infastructure"

was the struggle to free all south africans even those who were not aware of the chains that bind them? If they were not aware of the chains that means they were not hurt by the excrutiating pain that those chains inflected on those intended to. If they were not aware that means they were not fighting with us, how does one reap what they didn’t sow, while the sowers are waiting at the back of the que waiting for left overs from something they worked hard. I think black people are made to belive that they must suffer. And the government white/ black is soo used to taking away from us, they do so even if it is not necessary. We sometimes forget the caring capacity of SA, we think SA is heaven reality check it is not, we ought to conserve the little that we have. And not let every one come and take before we know it we will be left with nothing.

tha - bang
03 Jul 2008 06:37

ok by infrastucture i meant roads, housing, schools etc,
andi01 u seem to forget that we are a democratic nation and nationhood goes beyond skin colour, sex, ethnicity etc.Yes generally bnlack people fought for the frreedom we have right now but it is a freedom that includes all of us.Us meaning those who consider themselves south african, its a lesson the guys in rwanda forgot. That as long as we can not see the other as a fellow south african and try to improve the life of the fellow south african and rather improve just the life of the black man, or woman, or Zulu or Motswana we are digging a whole for ourselves.
we live in a democratic state not some one man dictatorship were the sins of the fathers shall forever be vested upon the descendents.
we need to build the country as south africans and start sharing the wealth, opportunities and joys of this country as a people and as a nation.was'nt the struggle about that, recongnising the south africanness of everyone and the rights and dignity that come with that, not just of a particular few

hi guys, on the Black -a- nesse issue has any of you seen a chinesse in a bank?

I have seen lots of them in a bank. I used to work for a bank and most of my clients transacted on a daily basis with our bank...with lots of money. One client I know used to fetch 7 chequebooks for his 7 different companies on a fortnight basis...he made lots of moola for the bank ek se.

nah people we need to grow as a nation, how long are we going to stay divided and only let those who we think "deserve" to be part of the clique benefit from being South Africans. I think this whole thing with the Chinease asks real questions about what does the Rainbow Nation truely mean in this day and age. is South Africa a truely multicultural society or is our multculturilism only confined to apartheid ideas of what and who is a South African.
