Last night saw the last of the zabalaza doccies in this current series.last night episode mainly dealt wit youth with disabilities. What striked me was how slowly things change, i take things like menus and access to resturant for granted whilst many physical disable people struggle with such simple things like finding a menu in brail for the blind. Having to contend with mentalitiesthat they are stupid because they are disabled, kinda like people thinking you are dumb just because you are black,I could relate to the story a lot.
The doccie centred on a blind guy from the Eastern cape ,i think, whose struggling to get employment in spite of his qualifications. A problem that faces all young people but its even more cumbersome because of his disability. The doccie tried to show that the limitations we have are due to individuals giving into the bad situations they find themselves in. Highlighting a lot of disable people who have been able to succeed in life due to self perserverence, technology and a can do attitude.Which is something i think we all can do with, the doccie tried to show the title character and the audiance by default that with a bit of tenacity one can rise above their socio-economic or physical standing.
on the negative side Urban Brew , a major player in the industry did not really put any effort into making the doccie appeal to the younger market. From production even to the pacing, i was very disappointed in how they choose to shoot it and edit. The dccie was made to look dull and the pacing was boring. You would'nt say the doccie was done by the company that has given us funky shows like Selimathunzi, One and Yo tv. But the doccie had a lot of heart and a nice character to steer it.
