Yizo Yizo - A Walk Down Memory Lane

I've just bought the 1st season of Yizo Yizo ,im later planning on buying 2 and maybe 3. So far ive watched the first 4 episode and man what a lot of memories. When the first season first came out i was still in high school addicted to homicide life on the street  on sabc 3. so I never got to watch the whole season uninterrupted, cause it played in the same time slot as homicide life on the street.

So one week will be yizo the second homicide, but since my marathon started what has got me is how well the story was written and obviously the look.
There isn't much of the violence that yizo one was notorious for in the first four episodes, but theres alot of character set up and development. The episodes are 24 minutes long, but so much happens in it that they feel like its an hour drama than a 30 minuter. Some of the characters are so clearly set up n one episode its incredible.

Which is something most local dramas still struggle with, having things happen that are dramatic and interesting, while keeping the characters engaging. Each episode so far has had that, then theres the look of the show. I think yizo was probably the first drama that took its audiance seriously and gave us good production quality.

From how the scenes are framed, to the camera movement to the use of different lenses. The guys went all out. But season one had its issues, but i think they are more budget constraints than cretive ones. Like the title sequence and the text used in the show is a bit pap. But so far thats the only blemish.

Which season two built on, from look to story to how it was shot.Season two was my favourite of all three seasons. The reason being it was more personal stories to do with healing, reformation and redeption. My favourite story arches in season two was that of Javas and Zakes , then there was Mantwa and Hazel and the poor surburbian girl who had to go to the township school,i think her name was keke.I could be wrong.

Then there was Bobo and sticks and the whole drug thing, classic. Then there was Bobo and sticks and the whole drug thing, classic. And i loved the blue tint they used and the overall styling,it was immaculate.

season three was beautiful pictures but the story was not jellying that well for me, but it was shot beautifully.More than any of the the previous two. Some of the themes were cool but season two still stands as the best one for me.Now once im done with one,i cant wait to watch two back to back.

So what are your guys's classic moments, incidents or season of Yizo Yizo
for me in one its Javas ringing the bell, the rape with the chickens in the background, papa actionand chester's everyscene they are in.

in yizo yizo 2: was wen gunman erased the tatto from his head after finding out that his brother was an apartheid spy. zakes in the wheelchaair battling with alcoholism. Bobo and his drug addiction

yizo yizo 3: the classic moment for me has to bethe episode where the guys went to rob the white guys and the effect it had on sticks. and the use of colour ,it was brilliant

<<<So what are your guys's classic moments, incidents or season of Yizo Yizo>>>>
Definitely Javas ringing the school bell. That is the one scene that cracks me up, no matter how many times I've seen it.

Who is Thabang in Yizo Yizo?? I don't remember a gay guy in the series??

If there's one person that needs to get these DVD's its me.
My parents never let us watch Yizo Yizo........
Besides, I could never hear what they were saying back then.. it had a lot of Nguni and me was still clueless.

it 's was when Thiza athola ukuthi he is also gay.

Gosh, Thiza found out he was gay too??
Okay, I only watched up to Season 2 coz Season 3 was so whack for me. I think I only saw 1 or 2 episodes. I hated that they changed Hazel.

Oh, another classis scene was when Bobo was smoking and he saw a cow heheheheheh. I loved hearing Ishmael (or was it Skeem) in the background. The YizoYizo soundtracks were awesome man....especially if you love Kwaito.

There is certainly nothing i want to ever remember from Yizo Yizo at all shame, thank you very much for Yizo Yizo!!!!!

05 Jun 2008 07:27

I remeber the scene with the cow i think it wasafter the bash or something it was hilarious.
but sponono menzi was good as "R-kelly" jealous down. i think hewas better in yizo than in generations.
another classic scene was the so called "rape scene'' in prison. I remember it made such hoo ha in the country it was ridiculous how the powers that be reacted to it.it was ironic seeing poor chester get it from the back, who would have thought it could happen

i kept imagining what chester-the actor was feeling at the time, was there somethin rubbing his ass and what if that guy had some hard-on-by  mistake not because he's gay...you know how unpredictable our willies can be (remember your hard-on in high school when you had to wipe the blackboard and you couldnt walk properly......hi hi hi hi

acting is somethin else mara

I also dont wanna rememba anything about it. The 1st time I watched, it was that scene where someone (sorry I cant rememba the characters) swallowed money and was "helped" to take it out. It traumatised me and I neva watched it again.

The scene I remember was Sonny boy trying to forcefully enter the school on Valentine's Bash,  Javas' dad and Gunmen were guarding the gate and they kept calling him umageza empompini. And he was screaming outside the fence for uHazel.

but the theme song was briliant.shuga was right if u loved kwaito then u'd love yizo.
im just thinking of "Ghetto fabulous" and what it did for uMzolisto and the second season, that beat,i even remember the TKZee performance at the end of 1st season.that was very cool.espicially since kwaito had not yet solidified its position as the back bone of sa music back then.
but the theme song of season 1 is a classic.even the general soundtrack was brilliant.
eish im a fan i cant help but praise and praise some more

Nice 1 tha-bang. I think I only saw the 2 seasons, I lost interest after that. Getting dvd is not a bad idea. (((I think yizo was probably the first drama that took its audiance seriously and gave us good production quality.))) Very true, this also opened doors for many other stories like Tshatsha, don't remember the rest. Congratulations tha-bang on making front page.

tha - bang
06 Jun 2008 01:27

well thanks Dimago. Ive finished the 1st season in two days.now i need to save to get the second season which was my personal favourite.
but you are right , yizo opened alot of doors for people in front and behind the camera.
Infront : it gave us meshack mavuso aka javas whose now on isidingo, zola , mbali ntuli who was kk in yizo 2 and is now on the lab, nambitha mpumlwana who was the principal,it relaunched dumisani dlaminis career so that of jet novuka and many more.
then behind the scenes it solidified teboho mahlatsi's career as a director whose now directing jacobs cross and working on a feature film called scar,it launched the career of robbie malpage the young DOP who was behind the stunning look of yizo 2 and 3 who has now worked on countless ads. it created bomb shelter and it introduced berry berk whose worked on countless dramas on sabc since.
an it gave credibility to kwaito music as a form of youth expression.
it made shows like tsha tsha possible cause it proved that young south africans can relate to themself on tv if they portrayed honestly.
it will always hold a special place in most people hearts. i think it defined an era for those who loved it.personaly 2 shaped my out look on what tv can be in this country.
