I've just bought the 1st season of Yizo Yizo ,im later planning on buying 2 and maybe 3. So far ive watched the first 4 episode and man what a lot of memories. When the first season first came out i was still in high school addicted to homicide life on the street on sabc 3. so I never got to watch the whole season uninterrupted, cause it played in the same time slot as homicide life on the street.
So one week will be yizo the second homicide, but since my marathon started what has got me is how well the story was written and obviously the look.
There isn't much of the violence that yizo one was notorious for in the first four episodes, but theres alot of character set up and development. The episodes are 24 minutes long, but so much happens in it that they feel like its an hour drama than a 30 minuter. Some of the characters are so clearly set up n one episode its incredible.
Which is something most local dramas still struggle with, having things happen that are dramatic and interesting, while keeping the characters engaging. Each episode so far has had that, then theres the look of the show. I think yizo was probably the first drama that took its audiance seriously and gave us good production quality.
From how the scenes are framed, to the camera movement to the use of different lenses. The guys went all out. But season one had its issues, but i think they are more budget constraints than cretive ones. Like the title sequence and the text used in the show is a bit pap. But so far thats the only blemish.
Which season two built on, from look to story to how it was shot.Season two was my favourite of all three seasons. The reason being it was more personal stories to do with healing, reformation and redeption. My favourite story arches in season two was that of Javas and Zakes , then there was Mantwa and Hazel and the poor surburbian girl who had to go to the township school,i think her name was keke.I could be wrong.
Then there was Bobo and sticks and the whole drug thing, classic. Then there was Bobo and sticks and the whole drug thing, classic. And i loved the blue tint they used and the overall styling,it was immaculate.
season three was beautiful pictures but the story was not jellying that well for me, but it was shot beautifully.More than any of the the previous two. Some of the themes were cool but season two still stands as the best one for me.Now once im done with one,i cant wait to watch two back to back.
