Starting on Animal Planet in October:

New Series:

Saving Grace
Premiere date: Tuesday 2 October at 20:00

‘Saving Grace’ follows the personal story of Philippa Forrester and her husband, wildlife cameraman Charlie, as they attempt to save an abandoned baby otter called Grace. The series tracks Grace's progress as Philippa and Charlie attempt to teach Grace how to survive in the wild, from swimming lessons in the jacuzzi to teaching her how to fish.

Philippa and Charlie's ultimate aim is to release Grace back into the wild, in the river that runs through their garden, which will be documented in the final programme. Can Grace survive in the wild? 'Saving Grace' is a humorous, emotional and personal story showing as part of Animal Planet's 'Wild Hearts' Special.

Animal Cops Phoenix
Premiere date: Friday 5 October at 22:00

Phoenix, Arizona: home to America's first and only dedicated 'Animal Paramedics'. Follow the work of 17 Emergency Animal Medical Technicians employed by the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) as they go about their daily missions to rescue sick, injured and abused animals. This exciting series transports viewers to the heart of Arizona and allows them to witness the high-fuelled drama as they provide emergency, life-saving medical care to animals all over.

Crime Scene Wild
Premiere date: Monday 29 October at 22:00

As part of Animal Planet's 'Wild Hearts' Special, viewers can see Steve Galster take a direct approach to the grisly world of animal crime in 'Crime Scene Wild'.

In each episode Steve sets out to solve a wild crime; he uses hot DNA forensic techniques to locate the criminals, he investigates who’s getting the profits and finds out who the mastermind is.

Joining with local experts, he works out a ‘sting’ to catch the crooks in the act. Each investigation uses the most up-to-date forensic methods possible to identify and locate the perpetrators. For the first time, scientists can identify endangered species from just a small amount of tissue, a crucial method for identifying criminals.

DNA evidence and sophisticated tracking programmes are applied to tracing and catching wildlife criminals in the act. This series will expose the rackets that fuel each trade, identify the illegal practices that feed into it, chart its routes and uncover the people who run it.

Documentaries & specials:

Astrochimp #65
On: Wednesday 3 October at 20:00

On January 31st, 1961, at Cape Canavarel, a three-year-old chimpanzee named Ham took a 16-minute, 3,000km per hour ride that made shocking history. Strapped inside a secured project Mercury capsule, the young chimp blasted off into the sky, becoming the first intelligent being to ride on an American rocket into suborbital space.

Scientists said they could not risk sending humans on a journey into the unkown, but that chimps were the perfect space pionerers. This fascinating and heartwarming film tells the story of Ham and how he was chosen from over 40 other chimps to become the first 'Astrochimp' to go into space.

Ten Years of Monkey Business (Documentary)
On: Thursday 4 October at 20:00

They may not be able to say verbally how they are feeling or what they are thinking, but there is no lack of expression from the apes, chimps and orangutans that call 'Monkey World' home.

Love affairs, family squabbles, strategic power moves and deep-seeded desires: these are just some of the dramas 'Monkey business' has provided us with over the past 10 years. This three-part retrospective celebrates 10 years of this original and much-loved series.

From bickering over ice cream to stealing a neighbour’s mate to overthrowing those in power, 'Monkey Business' has given viewers a chance to look at the amazing similarities in primate and human behaviour.

This documentary celebrates not only 10 years of a compelling series, but also the dedicated hard work put in by the founders of 'Monkey World', Jim and Alison Cronin. Viewers can re-capture their rescue missions and undercover investigations that took place throughout Europe and Asia.

Raising Baby Giant Panda
On: Wednesday 17 October at 20h00

As part of Animal Planet's 'Wild Hearts' Special, viewers can see rare footage of the combined effort of the mother panda and her human surrogate to raise two tiny vulnerable panda cubs. 'Raising Baby Giant Panda' tells the inspiring story of the birth of twin panda cubs at Woolong Natural Reservation Park. The new arrivals are the product of years of focused and often frustrating work by scientists and conservationists in China.

This story covers the first six months in the lives of the twin giant panda cubs and their incredible struggle for survival. The panda mother, YaYa, can only nurse one cub at a time, so one of her twin cubs must be raised by the centre's vet, Dr Wei. This is a tale of two loves: the special bond between the vet and the mother Panda, and the love that develops instantly between the cubs and their carers, both animal and human.
