Dummy's Guide: Understanding US Ratings
Know the numbers, where's it from and what it means. Not sure how it works. Read this Dummy Guide...

Biggest Winner:
Deal or No Deal (NBC)

NBC started the week with a solid well performing “Deal or No Deal” and closed the week with a strong “Deal or No Deal” as well as the no.1 show of the night.

Biggest Loser:
Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy (FOX)
FOX came close to being beaten by The CW on Thursday night and tonight The CW beat FOX in viewers and lost in .1 in the demos. Trading Spouses is doing no justice to the network whatsoever.

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS and NBC shared Friday bragging rights, with CBS first in households and Deal or No Deal-ignited NBC No. 1 in total viewers and adults 18-49. ABC finished third despite airing part two of special Barbara Walters: 30 Mistakes in 30 Years, while Fox and the CW capped off the evening in competition for No. 4.

Beginning with 8 p.m., a Friday edition of NBC’s Deal or No Deal in place of the regularly scheduled 1 vs. 100 won the hour with a healthy 12.68 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/11 share among adults 18-49. Considering viewers were getting accustomed to the regularly scheduled 1 vs. 100 (I personally was), was it such a good idea pre-empting it at the last minute for another dose of Howie Mandel?

Second in the 8 p.m. hour was CBS’ Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: 10.13 million; A18-49: 3.2/10), followed by a repeat of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy at 5.82 million viewers and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49. The CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #4, 4.39 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 4) and a two-hour edition of Fox’s Trading Spouses (Viewers: #5, 3.59 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 5) shared the No. 4 and 5 spots from 8-10 p.m.

At 9 p.m., leadership was also mixed, with CBS’ Close To Home No. 1 in total viewers (10.63 million) and second among adults 18-49 (2.6/ 8), and NBC’s Las Vegas just the opposite at 9.09 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 2.7/ 8 among adults 18-49. Although Close To Home built from lead-in Ghost Whisperer by 500,000 viewers, it dipped among adults 18-49 by 19 percent. Retention, meanwhile, for Las Vegas out of Deal or No Deal was a so-so 72 percent in total viewers and 79 percent among adults 18-49.

Also at 9 p.m. was an earlier edition of ABC’s 20/20 at a third-place finish in total viewers (7.49 million) and adults 18-49 (2.3/ 7).

At 10 p.m., CBS’ Numb3rs and NBC’s Law & Order shared leadership, while part two of ABC special, Barbara Walters: 30 Mistakes in 30 Years was a competitive No. 3 (and an improvement over regularly scheduled occupant 20/20). Take a look: Friday 10 p.m: Numb3rs (CBS) Viewers: 10.56 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/ 9 (#2t). Law & Order (NBC) Viewers: 10.52 million (#2), A18-49: 3.0/ 9 (#1). Barbara Walters: 30 Mistakes in 30 Years (ABC). Viewers: 9.26 million (#3), A18-49: 2.9/ 9 (#2t)
