The Comedy Central Roast of Somizi is the third local iteration of the international format, with previous Roastees being Steve Hofmeyr and Kenny Kunene.

Somizi Mhlongo has had a successful career on radio and television with presenting, performing and acting credits on numerous shows. Currently a judge on the M-Net reality competition series Idols, he also has his own docu-reality show on Mzansi Magic, Living the Dream with Somizi.

The Roastmaster this year is Gareth Cliff, who heads up "The Roast Squad":

DJ Fresh
Fikile Mbalula
Joanne Joseph
Kurt Darren
Nomzamo Mbatha
Ntsiki Mazwai
Schalk Bezuidenhout
Skhumba Hlophe

The roast format sees a panel assemble to "roast" each other before getting to the Roastee. Filming of the Comedy Central Roast of Somizi was open to the public and took place on Thursday 26 April 2018 at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg.

The opening act for the evening is a set by comedian Mpho Popps. The backstage inserts and red carpet presenters are Lalla Hirayama and Mojak Lehoko.

The head writer for the Roast was Kagiso Lediga, heading a team consisting of Camilo Saloojee, Christopher Steenkamp, Mo Mothebe and Muzi Dlamini. Contributors included Karabo Lediga, Lazola Gola, Melt Sieberhagen, Dillan Oliphant, Mojak Lehoko and John Vlismas.
