Description

Afgrond (Abyss) is a South African, Afrikaans-language television drama series which revolves around fate and the choices that five women make while each is fighting for their existence that brings them together.

Each has to make a decision that will change their lives.

Julia Cilliers (Jana Kruger) is a psychologist who struggles to process her guilt arising out of her child's death.

This compels her to stay in a difficult marriage with Basson Brink (Stian Bam), the head of Cilliers, Mouton & Molefe - a successful law firm in Cape Town.

Hannelie Fourie (Marguerite van Eeden) approaches Julia for psychological help because she is being sexually abused at work.

Julia is forced to make a difficult choice that will ultimately free her.

Lana Bridgett (Kim Cloete), a glamourous soap star, emerges from a five-year coma and realises she has amnesia.

She goes for hypnotherapy with Julia to remember her past and is faced with some shocking truths about herself.

Nadine May (Gretchen Ramsden), a candidate attorney, lives in Vredendal and her dream comes true when she gets a job at Cilliers, Molefe & Mouton.

She has to choose between leaving the love of her life, Franklin (Roberto Kyle) behind or taking the new opportunity.

She decides to take the job but her experience in the city turns out to be a nightmare.

Leora van Niekerk (Kanya Viljoen) inherits Ever End, her father's funeral parlour.

While she's trying to keep her head above water, she discovers the shocking truth about her fiancé, Etienne (Wilhelm van der Walt).

In the series premiere: Hannelie feels powerless in a world where the powerful abuse the powerless and Julia struggles to keep her family satisfied.

The series stars Jana Kruger as Julia, Kim Cloete as Lana, Kanya Viljoen as Leora, Gretchen Ramsden as Nadine, Marguerite van Eeden as Hannelie, Stian Bam as Basson, Wilhelm van der Walt as Etienne, Laudo Liebenberg as Stiaan, Roberto Kyle as Franklin, Ivan Zimmermann as Bernard, Craig Adriaanse as Ashwin and Octavia Meissenheimer as Ellen.

Afgrond is an M-Net Original Production, created and produced by Penguin Films and co-produced by kykNET. The supervising producer for kykNET is Tina Kruger.

The writing team includes Roberta Durrant, Margaret Goldsmid, Stephen Simm, Theltom Masimila, Quanita Adams, Tristram Atkins and Jsutine Loots.

Corné van Rooyen is the director. The theme music is by Jacques du Plessis.
