Description

Black Tax is a South African television sitcom which revolves around a successful professional woman and her family after the sudden arrival of her parents into her modest suburban townhouse.

The concept of "Black Tax" refers to paying it forward - a means of showing appreciation for all that your family has sacrificed to help propel you in life - a phenomenon that affects many families.

The series revolves around Thuli Dlamini (Jo-anne Reyneke) as she deals with the unspoken law of payback to the community of people that helped her get to where she is.

In the series, she navigates life as a single parent who juggles relationships, career and the slightly unhelpful arrival of her demanding mother and father.

Other starring cast members include Clementine Mosimane in the role of Thuli's mother, Martha; and Mandla Jwara as Sizwe, her father.

Other featured actors include Jason Goliath, Sne Dladla and Daniel Janks; as well as Mamodibe Ramodibe and Bahle Mashinini, who play the youngsters in Thuli's family.

This is a show about a young family, trying to find their feet after things go horribly wrong for their grandparents. It's about coming together and being thankful for what you have, no matter how little.

In the series premiere, "The Cost": What is Black Tax? When you're Thuli Dlamini, it means your father losing his pension and your parents moving in with you.

In the second episode, "Maya Angelou": To mark Sizwe and Martha's relocation to her house, Thuli holds a ceremony to alert the ancestors, where a goat will be slaughtered. This leaves Sihle in an awkward position.

In Episode 3, "First Day": Zakhele is newly-enrolled in Sihle's school, and it feels like an alien planet. Especially when Sihle recruits him to raise money for a ridiculous cause.

Black Tax was created by Meren Reddy, Joshua Rous and Luke Rous and is a co-production between Rous House, The Department of Trade and Industry, Showmax and BET Africa.

The series is produced by Luke Rous. The head writers are Meren Reddy and Lwazi Mvusi, heading a writing team that includes Joshua Rous and Byron Abrahams.
